I am very concerned as i read your postings... Nowhere is more vulnerable from flooding than the capital

of Kingston and lower St. Andrew.. Whenever I see systems that can cause severe flooding, I always remember Sir Alexander Bustamante ( gotta give him his title) because his greatest contribution to Jamaica

was his Gully system that he presided over to reduce the problems of Kingston where water run off is

concerned.

Prior to that Kingston suffered many devastating flood in the early 20th century with many loss of lives.

Unfortunately the Gully system has not been improved and has been compromised by dumping of all kinds

of materials by an indisciplined and uncaring citizenry and lack of care by Central and Local government alike to take appropriate steps to make the waterway do its job.

This system could spell disaster for the country as coupled with poor or non existent or poorly maintained drains in many parts of the country where housing should not have been undertaken makes me shudder.

As a youngster my parents used to make fun of Busta as in our geography studies at school where we had to identify the great rivers and their value to cities , we had fun talking about those cities on the Danube etc but stepped up our humour by specifying London on the Thames and New York City on the Hudson..and ......Kingston on the Gullies.

It was funny then but not anymore 😁

The recent flooding at Chelsea Ave area stems from uttter neglect by the Municipality and those responsible for not being attentive to building permits which allow developments to block or divert channels leaving some folks to be flooded.. There are many fools in charge of certain things making suffering inevitable. Lessons of the past are not learnt and so it goes.

But seriously this system seems to have Jamaica's name on it (Holness).At this rate if it becomes reality, it will be more than devastating as it is a slow system and with water flowing from the hills of St.Andrew to the lowland of Kingston and as far as Portmore could experience never before flooding...Marcus Garvey Drive could become part of the Harbour. And to think that the main gully, Sandy Gully was allowed to be overgrown and become land area....

And other low lying places in rural Jamaica could be destroyed with loss of houses too.

For someone who has been through a near Cat 5 Irma, I urge all to be very prepared. If you are house/ apartment is not safe please find a nearby shelter now. Stock up non-perishables and water for 2-3 months, and if you can afford a generator ( preferably solar) go get it. Please do not go outdoors during the storm unless it is absolutely necessary.

The slow movement of this storm has always concerned me as at 2mph this gives it loads of time to intensify. Also it may stay over land and in the vicinity for days! Do you all remember what happened with Hurricane Dorian and the Bahamas how that storm was stationary over them for days?

According to the statement, Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce Senator Aubyn Hill also issued The Trade (Sale of Goods During Period of Declaration of Threatened Area) (Tropical Storm Melissa) Order, 2025, effectively outlawing price gouging. It was issued under Section 8(1) of the Trade Act.

“This Order, which also takes effect today [Friday], prohibits retailers from increasing the prices of essential goods — including food, water, medical supplies, personal care items, building materials, and emergency equipment — for the duration of the declared period. Violations of this Order may attract penalties of up to $1 million upon conviction before a parish court,” said the statement.

“There will be zero tolerance for price gouging,” the prime minister said. “The Trade Order sends a clear message that no one should profit from a potential disaster. We are taking every precaution to ensure that preparedness measures are in place and that citizens are not subject to exploitation during this time.”

Just saw a report from the National Hurricane Centre here in USA, that puts the cone of the storm with eye aiming for Negril - Mobay at Cat 5 (160 mph) later today /tomorrow and the curious path taking it over South Eastern Cuba ,Guantanamo , then to Bermuda,Bahamas later as a CAT 2 as it stays far away from the US mainland dumping only much rain but no wind.

This will be catastrophic as several feet of rain will cause landslides in JA ..loss of property and maybe loss of many lives could result.

The aftermath of this Beast will be immense.Looks like Christmas will be cancelled this year.

Chrissy, I have sent up my petitions and I know they have been received. However this is a once in lifetime event that our Fair Land is about to encounter. I expect communications will be lost but those of us away from the fray are very concerned as immediate damages,loss of life included are hard to contemplate as the aftermath is gonna result in much suffering and rebuilding will be a monstrous task for many months and some places which are many according to the topography with so many low lying areas ,may never recover.

As I said earlier, this one seems to have had Jamaica written on it and it plans to stay around as a long staying tourist with very bad intentions and could be the worst disaster ever comparable to Port Royal 1692 earthquake and the 1907 one in Kingston. I've abandoned Zoom because it seems to be going nowhere. Everything looks the same. So I've gone directly to NHC and Met Office radar. Met Office has gone down with too many requests. The graphic at NHC looked like the centre south if most Western tip as of 5pm. I remember yesterday they were talking about landfall somewhere can't remember but when I looked at where they were showing it would land I had worked out that that was unlikely and the models would have to update. If the NHC graphic having it near the end of the island then the question of WHEN it turns North determines landfall or not and the cone of uncertainty shows a possibility however small of the centre moving just of the West Coast

As per CNN, Category 5 Hurricane Melissa is about to make landfall in Jamaica. Melissa is so powerful it will reshape Jamaica for years to come and could trigger a humanitarian disaster. Jamaica has never taken a hit from a Category 5, with a UN agency describing it as the “storm of the century.”

Having been through a Cat 5 Irma myself, twisters will occur. I suggest should your roof blow try to find some cover in the bathroom if possible. Going outside should be the last resort. Place all your essential docs in plastics, or ziploc bags. Also do not be misguided by the eye as the back end is the worse part of the storm.

These are modern day weather Phenomenons.

I have been through at more thana dozen hurricanes in my lifetime but nothing like Irma, and Maria came behind but thankfully that was not a direct hit as it veered south of us St. Croix. These hurricanes are not normal. We lost 4 lives during the storm , but in the months that followed we lost 10 x that as the trauma of the storm, along with the unavailability of medical resources took its toll on the most vulnerable.

Fortunately for my household we escaped any major damage. Just a broken window from missiles that were flying about. A lot around me were not so fortunate. The aftermath was apocalyptic. Like if a bomb had been dropped on us as all as the trees were brown, as if burnt, cars and trailers turned upside down, galvanize, kitchen and home appliances everywhere. The ghut was so blocked up with debris that floods came when Maria's outer bands passed through. BVI has bounced back reasonably well, but houses have been abandoned, some government buildings in disrepair and you can still find a trailer or two or galvanize on the hillside and sunken boats. Just a haunting reminder of what happened just over 8 years ago. Of course there is the PTSD that still affects many.

These catastrophic systems teach you a lesson about how fragile life is and how not to get caught up in material possessions.

This morning, one of my best friends who lives in the Mango Walk community overlooking Montego Bay airport shared photos and videos of his house and the road outside his gate. It looked like a tornado passed through the area. Debris all over the place, missing house roofs, trees without any leaves, downed trees and downed power lines. My friend and his family spent most of the hurricane in a hallway of his house away from windows.

The way it was sold, I thought the place would be flattened, or is it that Yard is category 5 resistant?

Anyway, we give thanks that it's all over; it could have been worse!

By the way, Yard should have direct Starlink as part of their service offer!

The worst in St Bess - horrific in parts of Westmoreland, St James (Mobay), Hanover, Trelawny, Manchester, Clarendon. Bad in parts of St Ann, rural St Andrew. And St Catherine. Serious river damage in St Thomas. Portland, St Mary, Kingston and St Andrew were spared the worst.

WOW! What I saw on NBC nightly news was utter destruction in ST Elizabeth. Santa Cruz where I use to hangout many a weekends is unrecognizable. Where did all that mud come from.

Jamaicans will always provide a little levity though – this man point to his groin and told a reporter the water was up to that level in his house and he had to swim to get out alive.

There is devastation all over the island - outside of Kingston, St Andrew, St Mary and Portland.. the worst is coastal SW but this Cat5/cat4 monster then tore across the island and exited in St James.

Sad oh so sad. As expected the aftermath will be hard to deal with especially if the government is

lacking in good decision making...where roads are impassable,the JDF or some other entity MUST use helicopters to place key personnel in places such as Black River. Even having 10 security persons per

trip would be lessen problems.

Same with food relief; are there not many Copters in the Army .They can land in small areas and

speed up things.

Complaints against the govt's response are to be expected. People are hurting in many ways.

Its a massive task but better mobilisation is key . A health crisis has to be averted with all that

contamination that is abounding.

One of the hardest thing for me is to cry. But I am in deep despair watching and hearing of suffering

and trauma. Govt Must step up it's game immensely .

I do expect the death toll to rise, anything less than 100 will be cause for much thanksgiving.

We are doing all we can here in Philly to send needed supplies.

We also would like to see the govt declare no cess /tax/duties or whatever that is being sent by organizations and individuals from abroad. That reassurance should be forthcoming as individuals are doing their thing to help their families/relatives and this will be ongoing and stepped over the coming months too.

Yes I saw pictures/video of Whitehouse and I am horrified. Deighton is a passionate one and a people person so it is understandable. Hope these folks get maximum help to recover and rebuild their lives.

Some places will take a decade or more to really come good....and the thing that is irksome to me is that this govt may not be up to the task of the requirements .

My wife's folks lost everything in MoBay. Still have not heard from relatives of her district Dias in Hanover. I think my few remaining relatives in Western St. Mary are ok.

We can only hope.

I saw a facebook video that showed that Manning's old building was totally destroyed. Been there 100yrs I think. My dad was born in the old headmasters residence beside it, and he taught at Manning's when I was a kid. He was horrified at the scale of the damage.

Oh yeah. Neita gave Dad the job because my grandfather had been headmaster when Neita was there. Someone quit and he needed a quick replacement. Dad was disillusioned after working for the govt in the aftermath of whatever storm had just gone through and jumped on it.

We used to live on the little street behind the sports fields.
