When:

New Zealand vs West Indies, 1st Test, December 2-6 at 11AM Local (3:30 AM IST)

Where:

 Hagley Oval, Christchurch

What to expect:

There is a slight chance of precipitation during the first session of play. Barring any interruptions during that time of the day, there could be slight drizzles throughout with overcast conditions. At the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, teams batting second have generally come out victorious on 10 occasions out of the 16 Tests played at the venue. With overcast conditions, the ball could be expected to move laterally on Day 1.

New Zealand are about to begin their campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, the last of the nine teams involved in the WTC to do so. They last played a Test against Zimbabwe four months ago while their previous fixture as part of the WTC was a year ago when England came to their shores and won the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy 2-1.
West Indies, on the other hand, have endured a torrid start to their WTC cycle with a 3-0 whitewash against Australia at home which included being bowled out for 27 in the final Test. A 2-0 defeat to India followed in the subcontinent to make matters worse. But, the men from the Caribbean showed a lot more application in the second Test against India, dragging the game to Day 5 after India enforced the follow-on. John Campbell and Shai Hope led the fight with centuries.

how else would you get that 100 points?

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 4:34:22 PM

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Roston Chase:
We are gonna bowl first. The overhead conditions, the greenness of the wicket and the stats here. We have got Kemar Roach back. We have a few changes. The best team about this team, we have time on our hands
.Tom Latham:
We have batted many times here. Few overhead conditions. If we do well in the first session, we should be okay. It is good if you are positive and looking to score. Some of the guys who have come in today have done well in ODI and first-class cricket.

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 4:40:13 PM

New Zealand (Playing XI):

Drapsey Dec 1, 2025, 4:45:04 PM

This Ojay guy must be really good.

I haven't heard much of him, but here he is debuting in the 1st test.

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 4:48:05 PM

The pitch report was supposed to happen. But the hessian cover has been put on as a precautionary measure because of the little drizzle that is on. Neil Wagner believes there will be movment because of the grass cover but the overhead conditions will play a bigger part. The floodlights are on as well.

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 4:51:02 PM

Matt Henry:
It is exciting. We are kicking off our WTC. Some boys are making their transition here at this level. The guys know the conditions here. Traditionally there is bounce here at Hagley. They are a strong side with bat and ball. Specially, with the ball. The batters will look to tough it out for as long as possible.

voiceofreason Dec 1, 2025, 4:52:14 PM

@Drapsey

Need at least one Yardie for balance.

imusic Dec 1, 2025, 4:54:40 PM

I almost had it right. Shields in for Phillip.

Congrats to Shields on his debut. Make it count!

I think playing XI will be as follows:
Campbell

Athanaze

Windies won Dah Toss and elected to field...🤔

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 4:58:29 PM

There was rain expected during the first session. The NZ players and the Windies team are lining up to go out into the middle. The rain is still around, though very little. The players making their way for the anthems led by the umpires. The Windies anthem being played first. All the lights have been switched on it seems. The NZ anthem being played now.

imusic Dec 1, 2025, 5:00:32 PM

Imagine what it must be like to be Anderson Phillip.

Made WI debut. Played 2 test matches. Didn't light the cricketing world afire. Didn't toots dung de place either. Well....maybe that's arguable seeing what's happened subsequently.

Selected for tour of India. Rookie Layne with minimal FC matches selected and Phillip dropped

Played 2nd test match due to Layne injury. Didn't take a wicket

Selected for the NZ tour with Layne and another rookie with even less FC experience than Layne

Dropped in favour of BOTH

Good for the ego big grin

If athanaze dont score no runs he should be dropped from all formats

Day 1: Play stopped due to rain

NZ 5 /1 (3.3) CRR:1.43

The groundsmen are coming in. Play has been stopped. It started raining all of a sudden. The Hessian being rolled out.

Tom Latham 1(10)

Kane Williamson 3(9)

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 5:30:01 PM

Neil Wagner with an umbrella says, 'The rain is getting heavier. It doesn't look good. The wind is dying out. Don't think it is going anywhere.' He adds, 'there is some moisture and it is quite wet already on the outfield. It is a good draining ground.'

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 6:26:56 PM

12:20 Local Time, 23:20 GMT, 04:50 IST: The drizzle seems to have stopped. The groundsmen have started their mop-up operation. They are clearing the water from the covers. Both the umpires are once again out in the middle and they are having a chat with the head groundsman. Now, the covers are being peeled off. The cover has been taken off from the bowler's run-up area. Looks like we are going to have a restart soon. And as I type, the sun is shining through now.

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 6:43:54 PM

The players and the umpires make their way out to the middle. Both Latham and Williamson will have to refocus and start afresh again. Seales to continue his over. Three slips and a gully in place. Here we go...

3.4

Jayden Seales to Latham, no run, nicely bowled!

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 6:47:28 PM

4.1

Roach to Williamson, 3 runs, nicely played! Shortish and some room on offer, Williamson gets on top of the bounce and cuts it through point. The chase is on and the fielder cuts it off near the fence. Three runs result

West Indies review for a lbw!

Looked high to the naked eye.

8.2

Roach to Williamson, no run, West Indies review for a lbw! Looked high to the naked eye. Roach convinces Chase to take the review. Was a back of a length delivery that seamed in from off, Williamson hopped to keep it out but got beaten on the inside edge to get struck above the knee roll on the front pad. UltraEdge shows a flat line. Over to ball-tracking and it reveals that it is bouncing over the stumps. Not a wise review considering

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 7:11:56 PM

9.1

Jayden Seales to Williamson, 3 runs, pitched up outside off, swinging away, Williamson reaches out and drives it in the gap through covers. The fielder gives it a chase to cut it off. Three runs taken

Trex Dec 1, 2025, 7:15:25 PM

Have to give Kemar Roach his due. A good Test fast bowler who has put in a lot of work for the West Indies over the past decade or so.

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 7:19:52 PM

13:16 Local Time, 00:16 GMT, 05:46 IST: Well, well, it has started raining again! Off go the players once again.

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 8:22:47 PM

15.6

Johann Layne to Williamson, no run, this is so much better from Layne - pitched up and straightens from a length, opens up KW on the angle and bounces off the thigh-pad to slip

15.5

Johann Layne to Williamson, no run, beaten, much better from Layne - short of a good length and seaming away from off, draws KW into a tentative poke and he's beaten on the outside edge

15.4

Johann Layne to Williamson, no run, short of a good length and just outside off - KW stays back in defence

15.3

Johann Layne to Williamson, no run, beaten, back of a length and shaping away from outside off - KW hung his bat out and is beaten by the movement

15.2

Johann Layne to Williamson, no run, fuller length delivery outside off - KW plays from the crease as he drove it to mid-off

15.1

Johann Layne to Williamson, no run, beaten, short of a good length and straightening from a length around off, makes KW play and then beats him on the outside edge

Ojay Shields, right-arm fast medium, comes into the attack

16.1

Ojay Shields to Latham, no ball, FOUR,short, wide and four, a gentle start from the debutant, oversteps and then offers width to the left-hander - Latham gets on top of the bounce and cuts it square past point for a boundary

Drapsey Dec 1, 2025, 8:25:20 PM

That's some kind of a welcome to the debutant.

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 8:25:52 PM

16.3

Ojay Shields to Williamson, no run, beautifully bowled, fuller length delivery and swinging away late, the length drew KW into the drive and he's lucky not to have edged it

Johann Layne to Latham, 3 runs, nicley played, full and swinging into the left-hander - but it's right in the zone and Latham punches it back past the non-striker, chase for mid-on and he's back for the third

Drapsey Dec 1, 2025, 8:31:45 PM

And Latham moves into double figures. Wow!

WOjay Shields to Williamson, out Bowled!!

Williamson b Ojay Shields 33(61) [4s-4]

18.4

Ojay Shields to Williamson, no ball, a debut Test wicket for Shields, but it's a front-foot no-ball, heartbreak for the youngster, pitched up and jagged back into the right-hander, drew KW into a casual drive and burst through the gate, crashing into the top of off-stump, but the joy was shortlived

Narper Dec 1, 2025, 8:37:38 PM

Ojay Shields to Williamson, 3 runs, short and wide of off, KW is on his toes as he cuts it in front of square on the off-side, chase for the fielder and he's back for the third

29.4

Justin Greaves to Williamson, out Caught by Athanaze!! There's the breakthrough West Indies were searching for! Sharp take from Athanaze in the slip cordon. Williamson was troubled earlier in the off-stump channel as well and this time he perishes. In the corridor of uncertainty, angling in initially but it straightens after landing to square Williamson up. He looks to keep it out but gets a thick outside edge behind. Athanaze at second slip gets low to his right and takes a good catch in front of him with both hands. There was also some extra bounce and Williamson couldn't handle it.

Justin Greaves to Latham, out Caught by Tevin Imlach!! Justin Greaves strikes twice in quick succession and he is cock-a-hoop! Both the set batters are back in the hut now. Latham's gritty knock comes to an end. Justin Greaves keeps it nice and full around off, enticing Latham into an expansive drive and the southpaw obliges. He tries to drive it down the ground but the ball moves away to take the outside edge. A regulation take for Tevin Imlach.

Matt Henry to Athanaze, out Bowled!! Clleaned up! You'd think this was coming - Athanaze was tied in knots by Henry and the bowler has his man at lat - pitched up and nips back sharply into the left-hander, drags him into an expansive drive - Athanaze can't resist once again and it opens up a big bat-pad gap for the ball to go through and crash into the off-stump.

Jacob Duffy to Shai Hope, out Caught by Latham!! A loud shout for caught behind, umpire Paul Reiffel shakes his head and New Zealand have reviewed - Hope was hopping across on the tuck and he's feathered a glove on its way to the keeper. UltraEdge shows a spike and the decision has been overturned - Shai Hope is OUT. The extra ball of the over is Hope's undoing, played superbly and this is a soft dismissal - was shuffling across on the hop and the ball just brushed his glove on its way to the keeper. Latham was confident, so was the bowler and the reviwa was was spontaneous.

It’s a great place to play cricket here, it's a special place for me and it's really enjoyable to play here. The thing for us is that we have got the ball to land in the right areas, things can happen quickly here, the good thing is that we didn’t go searching and things worked out for us. We just had to break that partnership (between Shai Hope and Chanderpaul) because we knew we could go bang bang after that.

Pitch Report | Katey Martin and Mark Richardson:
It’s a batting day, the sun is out. Mention that there wasn’t much sun on the previous two days. Adds that the wicket has definitely changed, it’s browner and it will be better to bat on from hereon. Opines that the West Indies bowlers need to bowl straighter. Reckon that the new ball will seam around and the bowlers need to bring the outside edge into play. Opine that if the New Zealand batters play to their potential, they will be batting till stumps today. FInish by saying that there are no demons on this pitch.

Ojay Shields to Conway, out Caught by (sub)Kavem Hodge!! Oh dear! That's such a soft dismissal - Conway was looking so good and he's holed out to deep backward point - short and wide of off, Conway saw the width and his eyes lit up as he went for the cut, didn't bother to keep it down, slashed it straight to the fielder in the deep. Hodge, the substitue - tracks back, goes reverse cupped and held on even as he stumbled backwards. A wicket finally for the visitors as the opening partnership is broken.

Roach to Williamson, out Caught by Tevin Imlach!! There's the edge and West Indies go to lunch on a high. On a good length and in that channel just outside off - the length draws KW forward and it then straightens just enough to find the outside edge - it's just a feather, but it carries nicely through to the keeper. The players walk off for the break with West Indies looking jubilant.

Justin Greaves to Ravindra, FOUR, this is a positive start from Rachin after lunch - back of a length and well wide of off, width on offer and he threw his bat on the back-foot drive, didn't get it off the middle, but finds the gap behind square on the off-side for a boundary

Justin Greaves to Ravindra, 2 runs, chance and Rachin has been put down once again -- this was a sitter and it's somehow shelled by Hodge, the substitute fielder at first slip - a second chance off the luckless Greaves - on a good length and in that channel just outside off, the length drew Rachin forward and it then held its line to find the edge, went at a great height, but it simply burst through his hands

Jayden Seales to Latham, no run, a huge appeal for LBW, was it going down leg? West Indies have reviewed - an inswinging toe-crusher and Latham was desperately trying to get his bat down in time, the ball smashed into the pad and ball-tracking says that the ball pitched outside leg, another top call from umpire Alex Wharf and West Indies lose a review

Tom Latham:
Yeah, not too bad. We'll try to get a bit of recovery in tonight. But yeah, as you said, a really good day and I'm pleased to be in the position we are. And as a local, was one of the days you turn up, you have a look at the conditions out in the middle, the overhead conditions too, and it just felt like a batting day today. I think if you look at the past couple of days, not great cricket weather, but knowing that it was going to be nice today. It was pleasing to get through last night. You know, we ended 30 without loss and then I think the partnership we managed to put on this morning was great for the group and it was obviously nice to keep continuing that with Rachin. Rachin's pretty high octane, isn't he? You know, for a fella that's got all the shots in the book. Obviously a little bit of luck early, but I think the way he played was fantastic. As I said, driving on the up, driving down the ground, pull shots. Every shot in the book and he certainly deserves the 100 that he got today. Making that partnership a really big partnership was really important for us and to put us in the position we are, which is great. Yeah, probably slightly different to the first innings. It was obviously pretty tough in the first innings, but it's nice to get through that tough period with the ball still swinging and nipping today and towards the back end managed to get a little bit free, which was nice. It was certainly pleasing to bat that way and I guess more importantly to put that partnership on with Rachin. Probably more time (about declaration), I think, from the position we're in. Obviously we've got a little bit of work to do tomorrow morning. But yeah, it's nice that we're in the position we are and hopefully we can obviously call a few shots later on or whenever it is tomorrow. So yeah, a little bit of work to do tomorrow, but we know it's going to be a tough effort with the ball throughout the next couple of days. Yeah, I guess that's another thing that I guess hampers the decision (On Nathan Smith having a niggle). But it was nice to see a little bit of spin out there when we were batting. So that's encouraging signs and I think it's meant to be a nice day again tomorrow. So yeah, all good signs for us moving forward, but we all chip in when a man goes down. So the guys will be looking to put a big shift in.

Narper Dec 4, 2025, 4:46:18 PM

10.52am Morning, folks. The news from Hagley Oval is New Zealand will bat on. It's a bright and sunny morning, the grass is firmly rolled in - no divets or cracks on the surface, so the bounce will remain consistent. "It's flat," says Neil Wagner. Nathan Smith is unlikely to bowl for New Zealand, so they'll have to toil away if West Indies apply themselves when they are put back in to bat - presumably for five sessions. Let's see.

Jacob Duffy to John Campbell, out Caught by Michael Bracewell!! Sharp take from Bracewell! Jacob Duffy strikes! John Campbell's resistance comes to an end. On a length in the tight off-stump channel, pitches and takes off a bit with some away seam movement, John Campbell leans ahead tentatively and pushes at it but only manages to get a thick outside edge. Bracewell at second slip dives to his right and takes it with both hands inches above the ground. He dropped a catch earlier in the first innings while he was diving across but this time he makes no mistake.

Jacob Duffy to Chanderpaul, out Caught by Latham!! Two wickets in quick succession for New Zealand! Both the openers are back in the hut. A hard length delivery on off, shaping away a bit, Chanderpaul is caught in the crease and tries to keep it out from the crease but gets an inside edge behind. Latham dives to his right and takes a good low catch

Foulkes to Athanaze, FOUR, streaky but counts! Good length delivery seaming in on middle, pitches and straightens as Athanaze pushes at it. Ends up getting a thick outside edge that drops in front of gully and goes past him. There are a few fielders after it but the ball wins the race

Jacob Duffy to Shai Hope, FOUR, sublime! On a length around off, Shai Hope leans ahead towards it and drives it beautifully on the rise through extra cover to find the fence. All timing and grace on this occasion

23.2

Michael Bracewell to Athanaze, out Caught by Foulkes!! Athanaze has thrown his wicket away! It was an ordinary delivery to be honest but it has brought in a reward for Michael Bracewell. A half-tracker on off, turning away with a bit of extra bounce, Athanaze tries to pull it across but ends up toe-ending it to mid-on. Foulkes moves back a bit and pouches it safely. It was pretty slow through the air and that also perhaps deceived Athanaze. He was early into the shot and mistimed it.

28.3

Matt Henry to Roston Chase, out Caught by Latham!! An action replay of the first innings and Henry has his man once again - It's pitched up in that channel just outside off, nips back into the right-hander and then straightens, Chase's stance means he's had to play at that, the ball grazes the outside edge and it's a simple catch to the keeper. Henry is chuffed to bits as New Zealand get closer
