Former West Indies captain Sir Garfield "Garry" Sobers has died at the age of 89.

Sobers was West Indies captain for seven years between 1965-72, and holds the record for the fourth highest individual Test innings with a score of 365 not out against Pakistan at the age of 23.

Barbados-born Sobers, who is widely regarded as one of the finest to ever play the game, played for the West Indies for 20 years, making both his first and last Test appearances in 1954 and 1974 respectively against England, with the ICC's award for leading men's player of the year named the 'Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy' in his honour.

A statement on Windies Cricket's official X account simply said: "A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers."

Growing up as children throughout the Caribbean, regardless of island of origin, we were always very proud that we had the best batsman in the world.

Saw him bat quite a few times as a boy. Actually enjoyed the matches against BG more than the test matches. Lived not too far from The Oval so got to watch much cricket for free. Pickwick was the home team in the area.

Oh my goodness! I am late, Walk Good The Greatest On Earth or Mars.

Slippy the 1st test match I ever saw (black n White TV) as a teeny lil short pants bway was MCC vs WI at Sabina 1968!

1st innings on a pitch full of cracks Snow to 7 fuh spit including G. St. A for a duck.

Next innings Sobers edged the 1st ball he faced and Cowdrey dropped him and went off with an injured hand.

From then until he declared and was not out on 113 it was pure carnage and genius. The man with the collar up

then took the new ball (although both Hall and Griffiths were on the field). At the end of the 1st over MCC were

0/2 Sobers having sent back both Boycott and Cowdrey for ducks.

He then unleashed Hall and Griffiths who sent back Edrich and Barrington for spit. Once in a life-time Sat evening lives with one forever.

After Sunday's rest day the great man bowling spin in tandem with Gibbs had England reeling at 68/8 when time ran out. The bottle throwing incident when Butcher was rightly given out by Sang-Hue caused time to be lost.
