interview by RYAN PATRICK
Did Cable & Wireless deliberately sign endorsement deals with individual West Indies cricketers to scupper rival Digicel's contract with the WICB? Did C&W notify the WICB of its intent and plans? Can C&W-sponsored players meet their obligations to the WICB when Digicel is the major sponsor?
In this interview, senior vice president of corporate marketing of Cable & Wireless (Caribbean) Rachelle Franklin ponders those questions and outlines the company's position...

well, after the dust has settled (and these two interviews have certainly helped to clear the dust), WICB will look like people without brains! Silly people don't look ahead and consider ramifications.

Even when we were the major sponsor for the home series, we had to pay the players to do promotion in their private capacity. There is a clear difference between those two things and that's a distinction that the WICB is well aware of.
Between April and May of this year, we signed our World Cup sponsorship and we signed the deals with the players (Lara, Gayle, Sarwan, Bravo, Rampaul, Dwayne Smith, Edwards and Omari Banks).
It is my understanding, based on what's in the public media, that Digicel completed and signed the terms and conditions of their contract long after our contracts. They did that with the knowledge of the fact that we had already contracted these individual players. The WICB will not doubt any of this. They are aware of them and understood exactly what we acquired. They did not have to approve the contracts since these were private deals that did not involve the team or the WICB.
For the WICB, this might be a new world of sports sponsorship. But, for us, this is the way sports sponsorships are done all over the world. It is not unusual for one company to have a sponsorship with an association, a team or a governing body, and for a competing sponsor to have deals with individual players.
In the NBA, LeBron James has an individual deal with Powerade while the NBA's official drink is Gatorade. He fulfils both obligations without conflict. Why is it a problem for the WICB? This happens all over the world in every major sport.
Well well well. Boy the WICB sure is looking stupid. And so are their six dummies supporters on this board.

The C&WIPA and the C&W independent voice of of WI cricket are large and in charge!!!!!!! But why is it i'm sceptic as to all this??? Well, what about this?
On C&W losing the WICB sponsorship to its biggest competitor, Digicel...
We did not lose the deal. We made a conscious decision to sponsor the ICC World Cup in 2007. We walked away from the series sponsorship...
Really??? I thought C&W made an offer to renew it's sponsorship at about $3.3 million per year. Is C&W telling a bold-face lie??? If they gonna lie about one thing (aided and abetted by it's rag partner) then why should anyone believe the rest???

More evidence of a bold-face lie:
Believing it had a deal last November, officials at Cable & Wireless had gone as far as organising a press conference to make an announcement but, all along, the WICB had been quietly feeling out offers from Digicel and AT&T.

You simply have no shame. Here the C&W rep. explained in detail what many of us, including this writer have been telling you and other BD&D incapacitated, and all you have to say now is that you are a "sceptic".
As a West Indian, you should, like me, be somewhat embarrassed by what appears to be the ineptitude of the WICB. Either they are inept, or they are being downright malicious and deceitful. Pick the poison you'd like to give them.
As some of us have been telling you, the WICB, cannot go willy-nilly and give away rights they don't have. Slavery for me, maybe not for you and others on the WICB, "done dead longtime in these parts".

We did not lose the deal. We made a conscious decision to sponsor the ICC World Cup in 2007. We walked away from the series sponsorship and invested heavily to be a regional telecoms sponsor of the World Cup 2007, the biggest sporting event to be hosted in the region.
Rasta, don't you recognize marketing spin when you hear it.
Let me paraphrase for you:
C&W did not "lose" the deal. They could of course have upped Digicel's offer. However, while they were willing to to sponsor WI cricket to the tune of over $3 million a year, they were not willing to go over $4 million. It was a business decision.
So it's not bold-faced lies
AND CC.Com's article was correct. Stop throwing out straw-men to divert from the serious issues under discussion.

the C&W independent voice of of WI cricket
When CC.com went offline for a day allayuh were sweating that it might not come back. Now all you can do is criticize it. Hell if you don't like its editorial policies go join another cricket site. You is all ungrateful bastards IMHO.
All I know is that if it wasn't for CC.com all we would be getting is the Cozier-Becca-WICB line. CC.com was the first wedge into the closed patty shop old boys dictatorship that stifled WI cicket for too long. The WIPA was the second. And there will be more. What we are seeing here is a non-violent revolution which will eventually give the fans and players as much power in WI cricket as the managers.
Knowledge is power. And CC.com is giving WI cricket fans more knowledge about the inner workings of the game we love in the past two years than we had in the previous 50.
Forward, Onward and Upward!

You people do not know the wars that C&W and Digicell have been through in the last couple of years.
C&W stalled on providing connectivity codes to Digicell long after ECTEL had agreed to the liberisation of the market and Digi had been granted licences to operate. They had to go to court to settle the matter. Then there were calls that would drop through for no apparent reason.
For all those who believe everything they read, Cable & Wireless also said that they would not phase out TDMA phones in the foreseeable future. That was said a year ago. Now they are offering GSM phones for the TDMA ones.
West Indies cricket is just a pawn in the game between two telecom giants battling for supremacy in the region. C&W knew it would have come to this because they knew the people at the Board whom they had dealt with for years. And the sooner we start demanding fair play and justice from both of these companies the sooner we will be back to restoring WI Cricket. Right now we may well have to return to C&W's original offer. And the plot thickens.

These cricketers who now helm the WIBC are a bunch of clueless amateurs who lack basic business and marketing acumen. As it has oft been stated, the immutable truth is that:
You can't sell what you do not own- that is called STEALING
This is the essence of the dispute and no amount of sophistry by the WIBC, Digcell and their apologists will change this fact. I seem to recall that Courtney Walsh had a personal endorsement contract with Digicell while a member of the WI team that was sponsored by Cable & Wireless.
Why did Digicell not have a problem with that arrangement then?
The game of cricket should be left to cricketers; the business of cricket should be left to those with the business savvy to manage a multimillion dollar entity.

My spin is two wrongs neva mek a rite. Simple, and if the Masters at Diasters (MAD) crew had any business sense this would never happen. Digicel and C&W can try anything them want, the question Rastaman and Co. is who let this Sheik happen?

What is the timeline here?
In the interview with Digi, we were told up front that it was done a few months ago - an amateurish explanation was given in defense of this sleep over by Yamfoot.
There is a reason for asking this question if the two pieces are examined carefully.....

This back & forth editorializing, him say she say shit no mek no sense to me and not helping the situation. In the best interest of West Indies cricket de WICB should call off de VB Tour to OZ. Mek OZ get India fe replace West Indies since dis is wha dem want anyway.
New VB Series: OZ - India - Pakistan
What we need right now is time to fix this problem PERMANENTLY, and trust me time will solve this problem.
So right now my focus is the 2005 Carib Beer Series which starts on January 7!

Hey, why don't we just face the facts and stop grumbling!!
Chrissy is right. WICB, caused all of this mess, they were greedy, or in much need for Digicel money (we all know why). They knew about the C&W individual contracts and ignore this fact, when they went into the digicel deal. Now its back to haunt them.
To solve this the WICB needs to be upfront & honest with the WI public & players & try to resolve it by some form of compremise. OR after this mess is over, give the players annual contracts with property rights, as Holding & others as been long, long hoping for.
WICB need to sort out this mess very quickly before it gets out of hand & destroy WI cricket even more.

The Mickey Mouse organization which is the WICB has once again fcuked up .. how some (see: rastaman) is blaming C&W of this mess is beyond me ... when they were bank rolling out cricket for tje past 18 years I didn't hear any complaints ???

Rastaman and the other dummies are too obtuse and deceitful to admit that they are wrong, even when the C&W interview rebuts all the obfuscation and lies emitted by DIGIWICELLB to try to mislead the piublic and turn us against the players.
Now the truth is out, let's hear what the DIGIWICELLBandits have to say.
Now we know who the damn scamps are in this issue. That is why DIGIWICELLB so want WIPA to stay under "cone of silence". Cone of Silence serve DIGIWICELLBandits purpose very well, allow them to do whatever shit they want in secret. They would love WIPA to stay quiet so that they can continue to do shit in secret.

can you really compare Lebron James in the USA and world-wide market to that of the Caribbean??? ..
.the answer has got to be yes....what globalization has done is to create "world - wide" markets everywhere. markets are integrated and connected by ...guess wot?....telecommunications.
Powerade ads by Lebron can hardly put a dent on gatorade business! get real man......
surely denting is really immaterial ...what matters is the principle and the principle is in another sport (precedent) a player has a team sponsor and an individual sponsor...you will have to do better trhan that to debunk the principle.
