HEADLINE: Ramdin Takes Baugh's ODI Spot

CaribbeanCricket.com Nov 24, 2006, 8:29:23 AM

From all appearances, Carlton Baugh is no longer the specialist ODI wicket-keeper in the West Indies team.

The pint-sized Jamaican was dropped from the one-day team that will face Pakistan in five day/night matches next month, his spot taken by Denesh Ramdin.

carib Nov 24, 2006, 8:49:54 AM

You have to play the guy you are paying a retainer to, even if he is not doing the job. Ramdin will get paid whether he produces or not. In addition to paying Ramdin, you would have to pick up Baugh's tour contract if he was selected to the ODI squad.

Congrats to the WICB for saving money. twisted

Those that didnt understand how retainer contracts work, consider this a lesson learned!

well, they dont have to-but there is pressure is to do that, rather than pay out more money for an extra tour contract. Thats logics.
They keep ramdin on, they dont have to pay Baugh, fly him out there, and fly Ramdin back. Thats a significant savings.

Well, it may be interesting if people go on to explore the issue of how you distribute scarce resources-like retainer contracts.
When people were singing hosannas to KG for signing 10 players to retainer contracts,I was shouted down for raising the issue of whether we should be just giving away what was clearly a limited resource. If you have only 10 retainer contracts, you have to to be careful about WHO you are giving them to, since you have to pay those guys and the expectation is that you will be playing them. You don't want to pay people you don't PLAY-unless you have money to burn.
Well, looking back now, some of these choices seem to be mistakes. Ramdin gets chosen to remain on the team, instead of Baugh, although Ramdin don't seem at all superior to Baugh in any aspect of the game right now( despite what trinis say).
Worse, Fidel gets a retainer, yet he is struggling to make the team. JT DOESN'T get one, and he is our NO. 1 bowler.
All these mistakes will be with us right through the World Cup too, because the retainers dont run out till August-September 2007.
So, do we play Ramdin & Fidel, or take a fiancial bath and hire Baugh and JT to essentially do their jobs?

Quick question. Is a player like Jerome Taylor NECESSARILY WORSE OFF by not having a retainer contract at this time?

Does the retainer contract restrict him to appearances ONLY on behalf of the sponsor or is that a condition of being a part of the West Indies team?

I guess what I'm asking is...is Jerome Taylor able to perform endorsements for Cable & Wireless (a direct competitior of Digicel) for example, when the West Indies are not playing?

If he is.....he may POTENTIALLY be able to make more or similar money through private endorsement deals outside of when he is being paid to represent the West Indies.

The WICB allowed WIPA to hoodwink them into discussing the number of retainers rather than the criteria for receiving a retainer. i.e. Determine criteria for extending retainer, then see how many players meet the criteria. If too many players meet the criteria, they adjust it etc. That should have been the framework. But once again the dum dum WICB implementation failed as the inequities are glaringly obvious and have already defeated the purpose of having a retainer in the first place. The idea was good but as usual implementation and execution poor. You can always depend on the WICB for that.

I am surprised that no one has noted that Sarwan has been named as Vice Captain.

Kurt Nov 24, 2006, 10:38:26 AM

Lendl Simmons, Dave Mohammed and Ramdin are the replacements in the squad, which was reduced to 13 players.

Either I can't count or there is an error somewhere because I see 14 names listed.

redbaron Nov 24, 2006, 11:00:34 AM

What shyte is this?

Dropsie Baughbye4ever never had any "spot" in any WI team.

Some prejudiced selectors allowed their deplorable prejudice to prevail in selecting him totally devoid of merit.

Their skuntishness was duly exposed and they had no choice but to curb their prejudice and let good sense prevail.

"Baugh's ODI spot" my ass.

Headlines contain real shit sometimes.

Why? He's the WI VC,isn't he?

I'm not aware that he was "unnamed" VC any time recently, so it's no surprise to me if the VC is said to be the VC.

You just easy to surprise, obviously.

Baugh is left out cos Lendl Simmons is lined up for da job.

imusic Nov 24, 2006, 12:44:31 PM

I was one who was very supportive of Ramdin's inclusion on the WI team. I thought his batting was good enough and MATURE enough to overcome the great adjustment to international cricket which had to be made. His intial efforts in that arena merely reinforced that belief.

His keeping is fine even though, on the tour of NZ especially, he fell back in that area.

What's most alarming is the decline in his batting. Beginning with the tour of New Zealand, Ramdin's batting has taken several leaps BACKWARD. That he is RIGHTFULLY, based on performance or more appropriately lack thereof, compared to Carlton baugh Jr in the batting department at international level is an indicator of just how BACKWARD his batting has gone. Baugh Jr has raw talent, but doesn't know how to bat. Sadly....Ramdin's batting these days can be justifiably described the same way.

I believe that he is short on confidence. From experience (on stage), I could tell you, lack of confidence is ah serious ting.

I have no doubt that dat damn experiment wid iron gloves, cyah bat again Baugh, leave de man short ah cricket. Look, I was in TnT when de TnT players leave. And I tell you, weather rel fugg up dem boy and dem preparation. Remember dey does train about 5 minutes from where I live.

Lack of practice is a valid reason.

He better improve quick quick though because he cyah use dat excuse fuh long. He cyah complain now about lack of practice.

To de best of my knowledge, it eh rainin whey dem is in Pakistan

I assume he practicin everyday, workin overtime in de nets to correct deficiencies.

I sure dey have sessions out in de middle to try and adjust to game conditions

Because at dis level...is all about PERFORMANCE. Doh perform, have a seat. He have plenty catchin up to do to get to where he used to be, far less to where he supposed to be.

Doh get meh wrong, I eh making excuse. Only pointing out de obvious.

Now hear dis. Dem arsehole dem pick ah team, some ah de players in de windies. What dey do? NOTHING!!!

If dem skunt and dem have any sense, dey would haave ah lil camp or something to get de 'local' players active. Look, de WICB jes doh have any tinkin power when it comes to the human resource.

Agreed...

...but pray tell....does that not apply to fast bowlers too?

..and senior WI fast bowler in particular?

You wouldn't be using that standard conveniently, would you?

Just trying to make sure that you apply same yardstick to all people.

Gayle_Force Nov 24, 2006, 3:19:02 PM

Baugh dropped because of some low scores with the bat, mostly coming when the innings were almost at an end. The potential is there though. His keeping has actually been pretty good, of late, particuarly to the spinners. A travesty is you ask me.

dcbreds Nov 24, 2006, 8:29:13 PM

Steeeuuuppppsss!

Let Baugh perform with the bat. Then he would have reason to gripe. Now he should just STFU and go work on his batting.

I am not happy with Ramdin recently because I think his batting and keeping have both declined, but tell Baugh he needs to make his performances speak for him.

crapaud Nov 25, 2006, 12:57:49 AM

The real issue is whether Ramdin is any better than Baugh and if he isn't then on what basis is he being preferred.

For myself, i always thought a way would be found to make sure Ramdin plays for the world cup even though the selectors had appeared to take Ramdin for tests and Baugh for ODIs

buds Nov 25, 2006, 3:00:49 AM

In reply to Banner

How is that saving money? Baugh's or anyone not contracted pay is based on gate receipts and performance? So what of the non-contracted players? Why they sent home Colly and Fidel?

Just asking.

It's fuggery to exclude Baugh.

rikiniki Nov 25, 2006, 3:36:15 AM

No, but when players refuse to tour wid de A team to play 20/20 cricket, then they have no fugging hexcuse for being short on match practice and confidence. 8)

Let's be honest here, the only ODI we won in NZ under Shiv, who was responsible for it?

Look, Baugh got the opportunity, to me they stretched it, and he failed miserably.
