Not so long ago In this very Caribbean, people owned slaves. That right was so deeply entrenched that it was fully supported by political, legal and economic systems. Until the right to that ownership was challenged.
If someone asserts ownership over something, does that necessarily bestow moral rights then? Too often we fall into uncritical compliance in the face of such assertions. The notion of taking ownership over our destinies and the associated rights and responsibilities is far too alien to us for comfort.

Hey Vaneisa, I feel flattered.....your response is undoubtedly dedicated to my one and only post on the Frank Worrell thread.... ![]()
Notwithstanding, what you're doing is underlining my observation on that thread; particularly with regard to the fallen status of our cricket.
No longer can we dictate terms: on or off the cricket pitch. Would that West Indies were the force we were [what seems like] eons ago, then surely in the midst of hosting a our first world cup we could propose whatever preposterous idea we had.
And be taken seriously.
Now back to the question of "ownership". Hosts or no hosts, the true "owners" of that cup right now are Australia. Until they hand it over (very unlikely) in April to a new winner, it's there's to do what they want. If we want it we have to go and get it...the way the hands of ownership was meant to change:..... by success on the battlefield!
In reply to redbaron
You write inconsequential drivel all day long in the rum shop. What would be different?

Ideas stolen again? Man ends ress up. its not about stealign the idea..
For those who missed what ends said:
here it is in living colour
In reply to ganga_fan
read the link I just posted and tell me if that lead post ain't in response to mine.
So wait -the idea for naming the world cup after Frank was turned down!! UWI/Beckles compromise suggestion to dedicate one match to Frank was accepted.
Cough, cough!! If a laugh ah pop  Good thing I never give a damn about apologies.
Look ownership of this event has nothing to do with ownership of our resources. This is not 'our' World Cup.
If the right existed for us to name the ICC World Cup after Frank Worrell, then the Chinese would also have the right to name the 2008 Olympics after their most influential Olympic medal winner or maybe SunTzu, Mao or Confucious. What allyuh say!
In reply to ends
You were wrong then and yuh still wrong now.
The ICC is a creature of all the boards.
They should never have been able to come in and dictate terms the way they did for this World Cup. Especially since WE spending the money to build the stadia! When the WC finish and all the profit leaves the region like water down a flushed toilet, who will be left to foot the bill? The tax payers including the same small vendors who have been shut out of the World Cup business.
Only then will we realise that WC to us didn't mean World Cup, it actually meant Water Closet cause that's where our economies will be.
In reply to Larr Pullo
Larr, so what per cent does WI own?
Larr, you're throwing out a red herring. You and I both know that notwithstanding membership, individual associations cannot dictate terms. At the end of the day, whatever one member wishes to do is subject the decrees of the organization as a body.
Period.
In reply to ends
You can't dictate, but you could certainly bargain and negotiate.
In reply to Larr Pullo
Fair enough...especially if you're the host country....but still- naming something is one of the most fundamental claims of ownership (that's why women take men last name in marriage). It really is the most presumptious of proposals being put forward by Mrs. Baksh/Beckles or whomever....
....btw, I see Chrissy is all of a sudden laughing at the idea after trying to claim it for UWI....how much thing they really trying to own in one discussion! ![]()
In reply to Larr Pullo
So should FIFA or IOC dictate the organization of their World Cup or Olympics? Should IAAF dictate the terms for hosting the World Championship?
Look we had the choice of a mascot representative of West Indian people and came up with a hip hop mongoose. We had the choice of coming up with an authentic song and came up with some middle class plastic rubbish. Deal with that because that's where we had a say and flopped. We do not have the right to rename international sports events.
Ask Venesia why T&T didn't rename the Youth Football World Cup for some famous T& T footballer.
Her posse's proposal was turned down, so now she attacks the entire region in an unbelievably simplistic manner.
RB hit the nail on the head - as usual.
I fail to see what is wrong with Vanesa asking a relevant question, as Chrissy has clarified a com·pro·mise was reach and an accomodation we could live with was agree to..... fine what is the problem?
There are no stupid questions failing to ask when you do not understand is what's stupid.

Sometimes you have to ignore Chrissy...she just bitter.
Really what people are saying is that cricket in the Caribbean has a flavor that you don't see anywhere else in the world. Sometimes the game in the middle is just the supporting event and the real entertainment is in the stands, the food, the people etc....The ICC has taken that away and what is left?
All that is left is all the debt, cause the people in the Caribbean can't even afford the tickets to go in and see the games.
In reply to ends
Yuh better read everything I wrote on that thread.
The facts -
1. The original idea of naming the World Cup after Frank Worrell was turned down by the Board.
2. All three UWI campuses, led by St Augustine's Principal, were brought into the picture.
3. The idea to celebrate the anniversary date was raised by Beckles and approved by ICC.
4. The ICC, WICB and UWI (with input from three campuses and related committees) are organizing the celebration of Frank Worrell.
Peace.
What you should ask the author is how I knew those facts and a 'journalist' did not.
In reply to Chrissy
I feel you playing semantics with the whole renaming issue. The important thing was getting some sort of recognition for Worrell. Twist it and turn it, the idea of honoring him still originated from Ms. Baksh's group.
Moving on from there, there is still the issue of the Caribbean flavor being excised from this World Cup. I 100% agree with you re the mascot and the song. Actually I hope they don't play that song anywhere near any of the stadiums or any of the events!!!
In reply to Larr Pullo
Okay, I get what you're saying but that is a different discussion altogether. The ICC, or should we say: the bigger cricket powers, are continuously imposing their values on our cricket.
But again, it comes down intrinsically, to our lost esteem in world cricket. If WI were anything close to the powers we once were, in this political/economic climate, we could still call the shots.
Right now, we're just a joke. Australia had to beg crowds to come out the last time we toured there.....tours which were severely curtailed at that. How can anyone take us seriously if we have fallen so far?
In reply to hewesleyb
What is wrong is that the journalist and her posse's proposal was turned down and the UWI compromise was accepted and that means that yet again I have been proven to have been correct one week ago.
Ah well. It's easy to look good in this region, particularly when the attacks are like water on a duck's back.
In reply to Chrissy
Chrissy, on one hand yuh trying to claim the idea and on the other yuh laughing and calling it silly.....make up yuh mind nah.
In reply to Larr Pullo
You just jealous...but at least I hook you...again...
In reply to Larr Pullo
I HAVE ASKED THAT QUESTION FOR YEARS ON THIS MB .
But you and other practioners of Fartology always succumb to you baser instincts .
In reply to Chrissy
I think the original discussion was who was the originator of the entire idea of honoring Worrell.
Showing a little grace and humility is still a valued human trait!
In reply to Larr Pullo
Then why is Vanesia so upset that they were unable to rename the world cup. Why is upset to the point that she's comparing the ownership of Caribbean resources to a World Cup which the Caribbean does not own. What has she written about the ridiculous mascot or stupid plastic song. At least I have stated my position publicly on both. Now she may well have written something because I ignore a lot of what is written in this region.
Back to work - I have a paper to finish.
In reply to POINT
But you SHOUT, you fool, and you repetitive, monotonous, so many people are turned off.
In reply to redbaron
Hmmm....I should carry out a survey as to whome that statement is appropriate....but naaaah!
In reply to ends
Look I gave credit to the posse for remembering Frank. I stated clearly from the beginning that Hilary's idea was accepted - naming one match for Frank. Ask Vanesia why she omitted (from her article last week)the fact that the original proposal was rejected.
Now this week she is writing like she just discovered that fact and in the process is making ridiculous analogies. Allyuh spare me - I do my homework and cannot be fooled.
In reply to Chrissy
So is egg pun some peeps face this week because some vital info was omitted last week?
wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....... ![]()

In reply to Chrissy
I following it you know. I remember how quick certain things got condemned and responses started flying left, right, centre, top and bottom. This week i seeing a little twist.
In reply to Larr Pullo
Huh? Not according to that article today.
In reply to redbaron
What, people actually still waste time reading this woman's gibberish?
When I see her name my brain automatically says, next!
Her currency must strong to rass.
In reply to sabina
Or as your favourite author wrote:
"Talking nonsense is man's only privilege that distinguishes him from all other organisms".
In reply to Chrissy
A delicate late cut for four.
But how you doing you sister so bad? What happen to female solidarity? 8)
In reply to sabina
I'm equal opportunity - what good (or bad) fi Faz and Coz good fi Vanesia.
In reply to Chrissy
Respect sistren. Is so me see it too. Man or woman black or white baldhead or dread all must be judged the same.
Chrissy and Sabina......allyuh don't get fed up of being jealous?
In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com
Vanesia, If the theme of the WC is allowed to be changed every 4 years, what then would it symbolize? Or more importantly, would there be a common symbol?
Would the "Ashes" be the same if Oz and England decide to dedicate it everytime to different personalities? How about the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy as we know it? Would you wish that name to be changed to the Ian Chappel Trophy at different times? Or worse yet, a different name every time the series is played? Do yu think this will water down the symbol that the trophy represents?
Wouldn't it be better if the WICB joined with business, NGOs and WIPA to host their own event that honors Sir Frank Worrel? Why do we need to take a ride on the ICC coattails to honor one of our own?
In reply to ends
Jealous of what?
I think the article is not necessarily about the World CUp alone...
btw, why whenever a woman writes something, her "juice" mus be good or something to that nature as hinted by some posters...and to see other "supposedly educated posters" yukking it up at such remarks....
In reply to anandgb
Y'all getting hung up on the Worrell thing....it's not that alone, there's also the issue of all the other flavors of the caribbean being lost....
In reply to Larr Pullo
fuh real...I read that article, and the Worrell thing played second fiddle...there is a much bigger picture...but some folks just got tunnell vision
Larr, maybe a new thread might better suit that discussion......Chrissy is concerned with catfighting Vanesia and that perv Sabina is bent on winding them up......so he can watch.....
In reply to ends
I don't fight anyone bro. I say what I have to say.
In reply to ends
sine Chrissy got called out...like she still upset
In reply to ray
Meeeow!
In reply to Larr Pullo Larr, isn't it true that "who pays the piper, calls the tune"?
If I did not know better I would think you believe that other people's money grows from trees. And it is available to be used by anyone as they see fit.
My experiences is life has taught me that if I want complete control, then I must fork out my own money. I cannot go hat in hand to beg and then dictate terms at the same time.
Do you have some communism inculcated in you psyche?
Write to incite
.that is what this author is doing
The author of all people should know where the rights to the World Cup reside
.It is not with the respective Hosting countries or else we could host our own World Cup years ago
. And to imply the slave/master mentality into this is shameful writing to incite!
Our current position in the world is not because of others, but because of ourselves
.lazy, indolent & insolent selves. The author is right about one thing we should have woken up a long time ago and join the New Generation in the new global economy. But assuming that we (host countries and WICB) could/should wrestle the rights of the Cricket World Cup from the ICC is reflecting an arrogant mentality.
What have we done on this scale in the past to demonstrate any bargaining leverage to anyone?
How about if we (host countries, people & WICB) do an outstanding job of hosting, maximize this once in a lifetime opportunity, so that we can make our demands for future opportunities and not before.
