HEADLINE: Getting Rid of Insularity

CaribbeanCricket.com Mar 1, 2007, 3:59:42 AM

The recent appointment of well-known Trinidadian banker Bruce Aanensen as Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Cricket Board has caused some raised eyebrows throughout the region.

In fact right here on CaribbeanCricket.com's Doghouse, it has been dubbed the "Trinidadisation" of the WICB -- clearly symbolic of the reaction in some quarters in the wider region to Aanensen's appointment.

Nice article, but nothing that people didn't already know.

redbaron Mar 1, 2007, 4:45:10 AM

The writer is correct. There is too much insularity in the WICBandits composition.

Is because of them come from too many island/territory.

So we must move with despatch to greatly reduce insularity by replacing all those bumshites and muddies with Trinis. With everyone hailing from T&T, there will be very little insularity, if any at all.

And BTW, we must examine the horns to mek sure there are no Shamaicans or dotties in the boat either....dem go only cause insularity.

And when we finish with the Bandits themselves, we must fix the selection panel, which is riven with malignant insularity.

What else account for selection of Dwayne Shit, Devon Shit, Darren Powerless, Shamwell to the WC 2007 squad, and the omission of Darren Ganga?

I say insularity has to go!!!! And old leatherface Gordhorse must move quickly to stamp it out in the manner I suggest....

...complete Trinidaisation. Is the only way to go.

cool

Yardies had dey chance-dey had 5 or 6 players on de team ,dey send overage players to ah youth tournament, dey use dey position to fatten dey pockets vis CWC 2007 and TV rights etc etc.

Bajans had dey chance-dey squander money, dey sell out to Digicel in what is obviousle a shady under de table deal, dey bring een ah PE teacher, and paying dem millions even tho little or no progress has been made. Dey pappyshow Chanderpaul, dey promote scab labour.

All dis time, Trini stay in de back and jes wacth. Now dey bring een ah Trini to clean up de mess, he hiring people that he TRUST, even so after ah Bajan accept de job knowqing de conditions, then try to change it after.

Seeing that TnT obviously has the best structure RIGHT NOW in de caribbean, why not give TnT officials a chance. I never no uproar like dis when Bajans and Shamaicans did dominating key WICB positions.

Meh other point is this. Dey must leave Dinas outta dey Trinidadisation talk. Dinas was elected by the players. And I am sure he will continue to be elected. He has nothing to do with the WICB. And honest people must admit that since Gordon took up the job, the relationship between the WIPA and the WICB has improved tremously.

Now all who doh like wha going on, could refer to this cool

In reply to Tagwa1Can you tell us how he defended "Trinsularity"?

To the contrary, he made the case why this appointment cannot be seen as insular, given the fact that the President was not involved in the process and the obvious qualification of the appointee. Further he showed by an analysis of the origins of the present Board leadership, how the idea of "Trinidadization" is absurd. It is amazing how we can read the same text and get opposite meanings.

No need to get defensive...Trinidadisation is fine....nothing to defend.

We very proud of it and intend to take it to the max. We regret we did not do it long ago, for if we did, our cricket would not have sunk to the low point that it did before the turnaround we started.

I personally commit myself to the total Trinidadisation of our cricket, to the point where I propose that it be renamed "Trinidadised Cricket" instead.

Full speed ahead, then, regardless of squeaking noises of protest that can and should be ignored.

Since some of you individuals worry about "the trinidadization" of west indies cricket. Then you should encourage those individual who you believe can do better job to apply and step up to the plate instead of sitting down and bickering. The other territorial boards could take a page out of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board along with Barbados and West Indies Cricket would be better as a result.

Hmmm. Well let's see what has happened - the players seemed to better treated and they have contracts. Barring the selection of the team, the organization appears to be more accountable and transparent. If that what Trinidadianization is doing, I am all for it.

For too long, these guys could not give a crap about the future of the game and were corrupt as hell. And it showed on the field.

Trinidad is the only place where the game is moving forward in Caribbean. There is an active league and the youth program is starting to produce results.

The Caribbean can only benefit from that experience and know-how, and we need to get over this arbitrary sense of regionalism.

My sentiments exactly...except, of course, I only care about T&T.

Insularity is NOT a problem....or, to be more accurate, OUR (T&T) insularity is not a problem...is a good thing for WI cricket.

It's the insularity of OTHERS that causing the problems. That's why we Trinis must Trinidadise WI cricket so that there will exist only OUR insularity, which, of course, is not a problem.

I'm sure that the Shamaicans and Bumshites will agree.

When their insularity ruled, WI cricket suffered terribly, but they never complained about their insularity then. For them, insularity was a good thing, so I know that they will support our dominant insularity now.

Now let's all get behind the Trinidadisation of WI cricket and stop wasting time discussing it.

A long and tedious article made worse by the nonsense re the selection of Dwayne Smith. How does a selection panel of 1 bajan, 1 trini, 1 antiguan, 1 guyanese and 1 aussie demonstrate insularity in the selection of a bajan player - particularly when the only official comments re selection indicate it was the bajan who was sketical?

If you have a problem with the selectors, ok, but these unjustified and nonsense alegations only demonsttrate that Daniel Singh is just another jackass with an opinion.

.

I think the Trinis have won the league only once in 20 years( statistically a historical minnow) and it amybe another 20 years before they win again.

They are traditional beating sticks for Bim and I suspect Ja too, but they must have made some progress or the others declined why they have some measure of success in winning some knockout titles.

I am not sure if Trinidadisation of WI cricket is the way to go but to keep the peace for now, maybe its not the worst thing. They caused so much trouble and its no surprise WI cricket fell to its lowest when they are in charge.

Everything go in cycles so in the next 3 years WI should be rid of some key Trini personnel so our cricket will move forward.

ne of Jamaiac`s biggest legacy is CWC 2007 and this should help rebuild WI cricket. WI should benefit from this Ja legacy for decades to come.

Admin Mar 2, 2007, 4:21:25 AM

While the WICB has been no angel overall, questioning the appointment of Aanensen purely on the basis that he is Trinidadian is rather unfair to the man himself, the board and indeed to the overall development of West Indies cricket.

I don't believe the issue is the appointment of Aanensen and the fact that he's Trinidadian. IMO, it's part of a larger pattern that *should* be questioned, discussed and fleshed out in the open. This notion that we should somehow trust the WICB to be fair/above-board doesn't really make much sense to me.

It's this sitting back and not questioning everything that landed us in this budup in the first place so I think Singh needs to be careful about placing blind trust in an organisation that hasn't earned it.

I'll have more to say in my response to his column on the front page this weekend.

In reply to Admin

The man was quite specific in saying that questioning Aanensen's appointment purely on the basis of him being Trinidadianis unfair to the parties concerned.

It's fact that some people are questioning and/or finding fault with the appointment on that basis.

It's also fact that the Anensen was the #2 choice in the original selection process, and, that being so, is a natural choice once the first choice decided to back out at the last minute, so there is nothing "Trinidaised" about his appointment.

When he was passed over, was there any protest about "Bajanise" surrounding the original appointee?

I saw nothing in Daniel's admonition that can be interpreted as telling people to trust the WICBandits or not discuss the appointment on any other grounds.

His admonition was about "purely on the basis of him being Trinidadian", and that cannot be faulted.

To label that admonition as a call for "blind trust" is to either fail to comprehend what the man said, or trying to mislead peeps here about what the man said.

As far as the entire piece concern, my view is that is an exercise in futility.

Insularity was, is and ever will be an integral and necessary part of WI cricket. WI cricket exists with it, because of it, in spite of it and for it. We can discuss it from now till doomsday, it make no difference.

Insularity alive and well, as demonstrated by the reaction of non-Trinis to the "Trinidadisation", as they so insularly (if I invent word, is because it necessary) put it, of WI cricket.

Bear in mind that those same people had no problem of insularity when Jamiaca and then Barbados dominated the corridors of power and influence in WI cricket during the many years that were the decline period of WI cricket - on and off the field.

I am all for insularity...if that's what it is. Let's try our insularity for a while...we tried theirs and look where it got us. And let's not worry or bitch about insularity...our cricket needs it and thrives on it.

And in any case, we are NEVER insular....it's always other people who are.

Reminds one of racism, doesn't it? And not by accident, either.

Three cheers for insularity...the best part of WI cricket.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed ogre is king!! I don't see what the fuss is all about if the WICB is made up of all Trindiandadians. This is the same tiny island (Trindiandad) that readily supports touring Indian teams over the WINDIES that they are now professing to adore. Does anyone truly think that by merely replacing one incompetent buffoon with an equally ill-equipped Trindiandadian will suddenly make a weak WINDIES team strong?? The fact of the matter is that the standard of cricket in the Caribbean is at an all time low, so allow the Trindiandadians to preside over mediocrity. Afterall, they are the masters of the art!
