HEADLINE: Misplaced Optimism?

With the 2007 Cricket World Cup finally here, there is hardly a West Indian cricket fan anywhere in the Caribbean and even beyond who is not hoping for, with some even predicting, a third time World Cup triumph for the regional team.

Ask the die hard West Indian cricket fans what all the talk about "the curse of host teams" in World Cup history is and they will still maintain that their team will take the coveted trophy at the end of the tournament. And who can blame them?

When will we be spared the stale & repetitive musings of this clown?

Here is this joker wasting many columnn inches just to state that his countryman, the terminally mediocre Daren Ganga should have been included in the WC squad. No, I am not fooled by his throwing in teh name of Morton because his agenda is pretty clear!!

The squad is already picked and Ganga was not included so let's move on!!!!

I can't imagine one man would waste so much time trying to say the same thing again..and again..and again...!

Daniel Singh is from Guyana.

Never mind Runako Morton's match winning innings are forgotten and has been given so few chances, as well as shoved around the batting order, but Marlon Samuels few heroics suddenly makes him a star despite a string of failures longer than Morton's.
does this guy think Morton is in helegance's class???

Further, does he think that the inclusion of Sammy for Smith, Morton for Helegance and Ganga for whomever would justify the optimism of WI fans??? Where is this guy from again??? rolleyes rolleyes

What is there to think about Rasta?

Samuels averages 28.21 in tests and 29.76 in ODI's, while Morton averages 26.11 in tests and 31.89 in ODI's. Both shithounds....

This joker must be from Mars or somewhere in his own world, shrouded in his lack of logic and clarity.

Brother Daniel Singh would have us ignore Samuels' scoring close to 3 centuries in his last 7 games-and focus, instead, on his failures-but we should give greater consideration to Ganga-despite his almost decade-long record of futility-based on his recent form!!!

Really, where is this clown from? Is there a circus in town? rolleyes

Statistics has its place, what you show is not one of them. Morton has peaked, if you had an eye for cricket talent you would have discern that Samuels has abundance of that, the only question has been when would he begin to manifest it with consistency? He may be at that point.

Runako on the other hand have been giving all that he is capable of, unfortunately that’s all he has, I too wish he had more to give sadly the technology for infusing talent into the talent-less is yet a way off.

You still have not said anything other than confirming that cricket is not a talent show or 'look good' contest. Performance on the big stage is what counts, so i reiterate... both are shithounds.

Well in an emergency you can always replace a 100w bulb with a 5 or 10w and get some light. That does not mean that the functional difference will be more than marginal.

And remember i said both of dem are shithounds...

Simply put, the cricketing world and the governing administrators would love to see a West Indies team that continues to self-destruct, perhaps even beyond any hope of a resuscitation.

For them, it would be clear revenge for the defeats and subsequent embarrassment that West Indies teams of the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s inflicted on the rest of the cricketing world.

Make no mistake about it, the rest of the cricketing world, in particular the traditional bigwigs, are in no state of sorrow for what the West Indies have now disintegrated into.

Where does this guy come up with this crap? Does this mean that the Cricketing World and the Governing administrators are now gunning for the Aussies?

There is just something mysterious that makes all West Indian fans at least hopeful that the regional team can and will come out on top, no matter where in the cricketing hierarchy and ranking they stand.

What is so mysterious about West Indian Fans tobeileve that WI will one day be at the top? It is called hope. It is termed belief. It is what Fans throughout the world do for their favourite team – regardless of sport.

West Indies could be nine wickets down and 200 runs to be scored, and still there will be someone somewhere who believes that the number 11 will hold on for a win.
– Is this unique to West Indians?????

This author wants to write but just blurts out thoughts and ideas foolishly. Misplaced Optimism my arse!

A lot of peeps on this MB just like to nit-pick and criticize everything adn everybody. What's new? lol

Flickcan Mar 7, 2007, 8:15:52 AM

Never mind Darren Ganga's performances in the Stanford 20-20 tournament and improved batting in the one-day version of the game regionally seems to mean nothing to the selectors.

Why name names of the others and not whom Ganga should replace! Are you afraid of the MB backlash?

Here are some names to consider: Pollard, Devon, and Simmons

Which one Ganga should replace Mr. Daniel Singh? I agree that a specialist spinner should be in the team and I would suggest that he should have taken the place of Pollard or Simmons.

IMHO,Ganga should be way ahead of Devon for the opening spot. Although Devon did very well in the so-called Regional Carib games, Ganga is, was and will always be a better option. In addition, Ganga brings to the table leadership qualities and he is a winner. Actually, it will not be hard to suggest that in hindsight, Simmons stays while Devon and Pollard should continue to refine their craft in the regional and not thrown into the deep end here…especially Pollard.

Tagwa1 Mar 7, 2007, 8:43:28 AM

A good article.

Coulda used a lot less words..ok paragraphs.

What's this about the rest of the cricketing world revelling in our demise?

This is a competitive sport and everyone wish everyone else is weaker. That goes without saying. He is writing as though West Indies is singled out for hate by other teams. If anything its the opposite, most other teams welcome West Indies more enthusiastically than recent results should have afforded us. Wasted lines.

Good points on the double standards towards Samuels and Morton. Objectively though Samuels has quietly been honing his craft as an ODI bowler and gives us just the option that the article talks about. Still Morton should have been included for Pllard.

Skuntcan the runs Devon has scored at regional is more than Simmons have and they have been playing around the same time. In fact all this talk about Pollard's phenomenal year is still less runs than what is almost a norm for Devon at regionals. How much more can he refine craft in this regional.

If people from Windwards and Leewards should make more runs in order to make to the West indies team, you guys should just facting say so. But don't try to compare one season Pollard and Simmo continued failure at the FC level to anything that Devon has accomplished in the cricket arena.

POINT Mar 7, 2007, 9:01:54 AM

A classic example of the Charlatans in the Region who masquerade as Sports Journalists , and despite proof of the contrary are quick to push their own Agenda , which is to have players that they like on the Team , NEVER MIND THE PERFORMANCES OF OTHERS .

These Pseudo Sports Journalists who are in bed with the WICB ,are responsible with their bedfellows for the decline of Cricket in the Region .

doublecentury Mar 7, 2007, 9:33:07 AM

It seems like Simmons and Dwayne Smith on recent form are very very lucky to be in the squad.Simmons is allegedly the back up keeper and dwayne Smith is in for his fielding.Given the squad maybe Pollard will have to play in place of Smith.Morton and Ganga didnt warrant a place IMO.

Tagwa1 Mar 7, 2007, 1:27:56 PM

In reply to doublecentury

Based on what form Pollard can play above Smith or anybody else.

Made some runs for the start of ONE season and then faded.

Guess as a Trini that's enough to make west Indies, ONE season.

LOOK DEVON SMITH IS AS GOOD AS A FIELDER AS DWAYNE SMITH.

Is he making the damn team based on his fielding.

Ah tired wid this shyte about Dwayne "Dolly dropping" Smith and he making it because of he damn fielding. Bravo playing because of his batting and bowling not because he is a good fielder. Why must there always be some different standard for this Dwayne.

Baje Mar 7, 2007, 1:43:00 PM

In reply to Tagwa1
Over the past year Dwayne Smith has been one of the most consistent West Indies bowlers. He averaged I saw reported 4.08 runs per over. He has also opened the bowling and removed some useful top order batsmen. When licks sharing early and you need a medium pacer to stop the flow, Lara has not turned to Bravo, he has turned to Smith.
Have you guys been watching at all? If you going to beate his inclusion then talk about replacements who can give you 10 overs at this level and useful in the field. At regional level he has been bowling quite well also.
I guess howevr by conveniently ignoring his performance with the ball, then you guys have more ammunition to attack him

POINT Mar 7, 2007, 1:59:01 PM

In reply to Tagwa1

If you respond to all the jackasses on this MB , you will go crazy , I make it a rule to only respond to those who seem to have sensible things to say .

Even if any player from the Windward & Leeward Islands made 1000 runs these asses will still refuse to acknowledge their accomplishment , and decry them being on the Team .

Lost in their myopic biased view is the fact that currently Devon Smith & Runako Morton have more experience than Simmons & Pollard .

Baje Mar 7, 2007, 2:11:21 PM

Runako looks unsuited to the one day game. Too often, he is in survival mode, which is fine for test cricket, but is inappropriate for one day cricket.

It's sad to hear the names like Ganga and Morton being considered even to replace Devon Smith.

Tagwa1 made a crucial point... Devon Smith is as good a fielder as Dwayne Smith (Coach also believes that) and he is very handy with the bat. He was just named BEST batsman in regional tourney and he set up a good partnership with Gayle in last warm up match vs Kenya when Tiger went for 0....to the point where commentators questioning the prudence in opening with Tiger rather than the better option Devon. (That's another debate)

Don't let islandism step in rather than objectivity and use petty reasons like Ganga brings leadership, etc. We have Sarwan and Brian already..too many cooks will spoil the broth.

And given the nature and expectancy of the pitches, conducive to slow bowling, Morton, who is prone to slow bowling will be a waste of time. I also believe Pollard is being over-rated. Mohammed or Lewis could have been included. Sammy is MORE reliable than Dwayne Smith....Go with the flow....

1.Gayle 2.Chanderpaul 3.Dev Smith 4.Samuels 5.Lara 6.Sarwan 7.Bravo 8.Dw Smith 9.Ramdin 10.Bradshaw 11.Taylor

Baje Mar 7, 2007, 3:23:48 PM

I rather open with Devon than chanderpaul. I like Chanders in the middle. He can consolidate or pelt bat

thomasthomas Mar 7, 2007, 3:33:09 PM

In reply to Baje I believe in when something is working, you should not change it...Gayle and Chanders have established a role which is incomparable in recent times.

If any should go early, Devon who is no stranger to the new ball can make amends; like what he did in the Kenya match.

Let's play the waiting game. If he fails in a couple, then we can look into Devon's elevation.

thomasthomas Mar 9, 2007, 2:21:01 AM

How can D. Murray from Trinidad say to "Faz Moh" that Ganga SHOULD have been in the Windies line up (Final 11?)? Who will he replace? On what basis? He is not multidimensional nor class-act specialist compared to the probable 11.

That's my problem with ppl at that pedestal. They say stuff, influence the weak minded, then later recognised that no serious thought has gone into it at the spur of the moment...and by trying to make amends, the notion has already been blown into the wind.

Sad Minds..just like some irresponsible sports journalists and commentators..with ulterior motives.

The Windies cohesiveness does not exist as the early days. No wonder the islandism continues to surface, though it pretends it's not...Because when the wrong man practices the right means, the right means tend to work in the wrong way...One of the elements that deter Windies cricket from advancing in recent times.
