HEADLINE: Forgetful cricket scribes

by TONY FRASER
It is frightening that there exist cricket scribes, amongst them former world-famous players, who believe that the departure of Brian Lara is the partial or whole solution to the free-fall that West Indies cricket has been experiencing over the last 15 years.
As evidence of this shallow understanding of the problems of WI cricket are statements such as, "It would be good to make a fresh start now that Lara has gone," and, "His departure clears the way for the advance of the team."

Fairly good article but I take exception to the statement:
Carl Hooper's already mediocre performances as a batsman slid even further as captain.
Actually Hooper's average as captain is in the 40s while his overall average is in the high 30s.
He actually improved as captain.

In reply to bajanboy Facts are not important. Making teh point is more important, no?
Didnt you notice that he never mentioned that the burden of captaincy did not affect Worrel, Sobers, Kanhai, Lloyd or Viv' s batting.
That is the way to make an argument.
But I do agree with him that the captaincy is not the critical problem. The WICB has to stop playing mind games with the players.
It is very confusing that they have a cricket committee and selectors, but they cannot accept their choices.
We have a President who is a prima donna who wants to dictate about cricketing matters and he knows absolutely nothing about cricket compared to his selectors and cricket committee.
The WICB directors make decisions by horse trading.
These crap has to stop.

It is truly amazing how people can write total falsehoods and seemingly get away with it.I would love to debate these guys.I would make mincemeat out of them.He also implied that it was the captaincy that destroyed Jimmy Adams batting. The problem is that a man gets up and in an article in a newspaper states blatant falsehoods. It is then pointed out on a message board that those statements are garbage. The ignorant masses therefore continue in their collective ignorance and continue to jump and wave them hand in de air.

"Lara's departure will make no difference to the serious structural problems of West Indies cricket, that the problems are far-reaching, that the problems are "beyond the boundaries" of cricket, that instead of attempting to borrow solutions from Australia we have to develop our own, and that the need is to transform the structures of WI cricket if we are to ever again become one of the leading teams in international cricket."
Pure Trini propaganda. Now that Lara gone Gayle gonna start moving his feet, Samuels will stop wafting at balls outside the offstump, Sarwan will stop hooking out of position, Dwayne Smith gonna learn to play straight, Bravo gonna stop getting out playing across the line, a host of batsmen with 40+ FC averages will appear from nowhere all across the region, and all our players will become articulate and able to express themselves clearly in English.

The disaster of the Richardson appointment as captain was compounded when Lara was handed the captaincy when he was even less equipped than Richardson was.
I will bet any money that Mr.Fraser never said this when Lara was appointed captain.

"total falsehoods"
What total falsehoods?
You mean we have actually had a successful captain since Viv Richards retired?
The WI team's performance went up after Richards, Walsh, Adams, Hooper, Chanderpaul gave up the captaincy or retired?
Or am I missing something here?

Jimmy Adams moved from a promising batsman with an appetite for big scores and high averages to a man who could barely hit the ball off the square, having to retire prematurely.
Adams could not even make the team consistently in the period leading up to his becoming captain. In fact some may argue that he made the team as captain and not player.
Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Rohan Kanhai, Roger Harper, Jeffrey Dujon and Sir Viv Richards were frustrated out of the position of coach of the West Indies team.
Malcom Marshall was not fustrated out of his position as Coach, he was diagnosed with Colon Cancer.
Viv was not fustrated out of his position as coach either; he as appointed temporarily after Maco could no longer continue and was not reappointed after his stint was completed.
The article can stand on its own without trying to make up points to support the argument.

Do you feel that Alberto also had "faulty recollections"??
The headline of the article suggests that its purpose is to ridicule those who were calling for Lara's head.He then makes some obvious suggestions as to some major problems and implies that all who called for Lara's head do not think those are real problems.
If you follow US politics it is exactly the strategy that Dubya is employing.
All those who want troops out of Iraq are "going against the Generals".Never mind the Generals who opposed this war have been removed and the current ones are merely following orders from Dubya himself.

I usually find Dukes a thoughtful and logical voice on this MB. Which is why I am a bit mystified about his ire regarding this article by Tony Fraser. True, the article is not accurate about Hooper's batting as captain. His views about the reasons why various coaches left are at least debatable. But Fraser's basic point stands. His thesis is clear. He is writing against those who claim that the departure of Lara somehow wipes the slate clean and allows a fresh start. He make no defense of Lara's stewardship. He merely states that those who make the superficial judgment that suddenly things will be better now that Lara is gone, are deluded. I concur.

The amount of attention people like Dukes placed on the captaincy issue, it strikes me as more than a tad disingeuous, that now that the captaincy has indeed changed, for them to now claim that "oh by the way, captaincy was only part of the problem."
Well sure, but are they admitting that they were placing disproportionate attention of the captaincy issue then? Because that is about the only thing anyone was talking about recently.

Why stop at age 28?
Lets retire all those lazy mofos above the age of 25. Given our recent history of giving debuts to 20 year olds, most of those 27 year olds would have had 7 yrs of getting set in their ways.
Lets start over with Leon Johnson, Gaj Singh, Bharath, Pollard, R. Parris etc.

I can't beleive it. It's like seeing Dwayne Smith play a cut shot. A UWI professor who actually understans numbers? I'm stunned.
Pity most posters here have even less comprehension of numbers than an average UWI professor.
Also of history. Remember 1969. Cleaning house led to 5 years without a test win. And that was with Gary Sobers in the side.
WI needd to develop at least 6 young batsmen who can average even 40 FC and hence 30 in tests or we will never be able to compete again. That is really whee our problem lies. But in the mean time, we better hang on to those who are now for as long as we can.

Let me try to do the Dr. Phil thing here - Blaming Lara is a necessary aspect of our ego-defensiveness within the cricket community - In fact, we need Lara to blame to maintain our sanity; if we didn't then where might that nasty little finger point to?
- We might say the WIBC, which was our intial target - ultimately though - and we know it - the failure of teh team and cricket points to us and our failure to build toghther as a region, our carnal desire for insularity - The reality suggests just as Rudder sings - small islands with small people producing small things, sand and all
- That is our inadequacy - our true selves - so what do we do? - we blame Lara instead and make-believe that if he goes, then Gayle will begin to move his feet and Samuels will be the next George Headley - Now be careful the players are immersed within our communities, so they might just believe it too - so there might be a short burst of higher performance, but then - Take that in your analysis, Beckles

Fact, is those currently in the West Indies team are a microcosm of the entire West Indies cricket structure that extends beyond cricket to ensnare every institution in the region.
Until we are willing to address the entire set up, simply replacing the 15 in the squad with another 15, plucked from the obscurity of our FC cricket will place us on tread mill to oblivion.

RedB and Commie made an obsevation recently about our under 15 competitions we seriously must reassess the way our youth competitions are structured and there is a need to take our young talents and develop them so that they don't go the way that the examples we have today went.

It is myopia, that's all.
Here the comparative runs per wicket (batting and bowling) for WI and NZ for the past 5 years:
WI: Batting 31.6 Bowling 39.9 Diff -8.3
NZ: Batting 32.4 Bowling 33.9 Diff -1.5
And if you look at WI's batting average for the past 10-15 years, you will see a continuous decline.
Also, if you include the other major test playing nations, the results are more embarrassing:
Aus: 44.1; 27.6 Diff +16.5 (WOW!!)
SAf: 38.3; 33.7 Diff +4.6
Ind: 37.5; 34.7 Diff +2.8
Eng: 36.6; 34.1 Diff +2.5
Pak: 35.2; 33.7 Diff +1.5

Of course they do not run WI cricket. But they have credibility. And there continuous vitriolic attacks were distateful and unnecessary.
We had this discussion a while ago about former players making statements that, IN MY OPINION, are irresponsible and dishonest. And they are irresponsible because:
1. Their mantra was that Lara was the problem and that his complete removal will cause WI cricket to get better, which we all know is not true.
2. Some of them went beyond scribing and thus made the whole thing even worse.
Also, not only was (1) above dishonest on their part, but they did not divuldge that they were involved, which is even more dishonest.
What is SAD about these events, as Fraser correctly pointed out, is that some of these SAME people were unceremoniously booted out of WI cricket before they - and indeed the fans - were ready for them to go. They should have set a higher standard, knowing that they themselves were victims, but alas, they did not.

 Also the fact that he may be captain. He was probably planning his acceptance speech.

I watch HAyden at 150 running as hard as when he was 15. I see Lara running hard at 200+. Why Sarwan can't do the same?

Noke, yuh ain got to tell me, Iheard this over three or four years ago, before he even became captain. I had figured is a bunch of old arseholes who can read and write deh fcuking name , excuse me. But the chorus was a groundswell with no obvious reasons. But don't tell them is envy, but everybody had a gut feeling he ain right for the West Indies. That is what made me stand up for him, this crab in the barrel thing ain start yesterday I remember as far abck as 2000 . a next argument was , he only make runs every other year , he ain good enough play eh every other year.
Yuh see nuff who talking can't be honest with themselves, I can be, never had an iron to grind with anyone, but I ain joining no foolishness. I am not a waggonist. Before I come on this Board I ain know a sould and who is for who, I love cricket. Deh bitterness knows n end and they can try to maks it. Actually, quite a few of the Guyana crowd did argue that Lara was to blame for everything. Now that Sarwan is on the hot seat, all of a sudden there are broader problems....
Larr Pullo and others relentlessly argued that Lara was the enabler of indiscipline in the WI team. when Lara got forced out, they suddenly argued that Sarwan was someone who could lead on the discipline issue. I think that's plain laughable. He is as much of a slacker as Gayle and Bravo, really.
Are you being dishonest or simply slinging mud?
Since when Does Lara represent "quite a few of the Guyana crowd" Is that Lawyer speak for obfuscation by any chance?
I am sure by now you know that there are a lot of Guyanes on this board.
Chrissy, Dukes, PC, Ray, Runs, Javed, Narps, Spectator, Denoke, and the list goes on. Could you please tell which one of these folks (including me of course) are guilty of that crap you wrote?
Maybe it is PC cuz he seem to be riding teh wave of an orgasm at what you wrote.
Man put your facting shameless head right before making such foolish and nonsensical shyte.
You and Dcbreds etc are not required to support Sarwan or any other Guyanese if you wish. You will notice that they are teh best performers whether they get your support or not.

What is the relevance of this question? he played for 17 years and was on top for at least 12 of those years.
It still hurt his image to see him having "pay party"
Denoke, yuh see what I talking about. If it was a free party he would ahve been flaunting what he had , because they did not get invited. Look the best thing he ever did was walk away. They don't deserve any better.

Man, I do not disagree with you. I am not saying that we can win only with great batsmen. But by the same token, you have to post a competitive total for the bowlers to bowl to. Having the lowest batting average does not help us. And given that we are 13 percentage points from the Aussies means that we are not gonna be a world beater anytime soon.
I will post our numbers in the 80's a lil later to see what it shows.
Edit: Interesting: in the 1980's, our batting was 35.0 and our bowling was 25.9.

I doubt we have a bowler bowling at lower than 30........................so if you compared the bowling with Intl...it might show up in a worse light

I think Lawson is the only one, and he is about 29.something. Collymore is about 30.something. So you both may have a point - that getting top class bowlers is probably more important than getting top class batsmen. But I think you will need to prove your point very clearly. And also, you need to acknowledge that mediocre batsmen won't make you world beaters.

Lawson....................bowler............in the same sentence? :) :) :) :)
Seriously, I think you need both...............but bowling might be more crucial.
In the 80's how many times teams beat over 300 off us? But I have seen many times our vaunted batting collasped under 250.
Indeed the CWC83 is a case in point where the batting crumbled.
bottom line the bowlers saved us many times in 80's

Agreed, and the 1980's stats bear that out. But it is very unlikely that we are gonna get a four pronged all averaging sub-27, so we need to give these bowlers some runs to play with.
You realise if we lose Lara, that batting average can fall to around 29 if the other batsmen do not step up.

Good article Mr Fraser.
Nuff said.
At some point the long talk on these MB will seep into the ego crania of those in possession of our propertyWest Indies Cricket and take action.
Maybe Gordon for all the "defense" he put up against Mr Brankers suggestions will be able to extract the cancererous cells from within the WICB and put us on a road to recovery.
But wait...we have to wait until the full board meets to get his decision about whether he stayin on or not.

This is the reason WI cricket is in a total mess! Most of you as well as WICB, coaches, selectors and players lack the vision and the understanding to move WI cricket forward. I do agree with Tony 1000%. Yes Lara's captaincy needed much to be desired and mind you he did not ask for the position he was offered it and accepted. However, as a player and a batsman he still is above everyone in the team at age 37. The captain is there for tactical and motivational decisions on the field not to construct, plan, teach and run the affairs of the board. So "DON'T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME"!
