Garrick, King, McGarrell Out of Squad

Leon Garrick, Reon King, Neil McGarrell and Sherwyn Campbell were among the notable names missing from the 22-man squad named to participate in a training camp in preparation of the Test series against India, according to WICB insiders.

Garrick, who scored 452 runs (ave 45.20) in this year's Busta Cup action, was left out as the selectors went with the hot bat of Leeward openers Stuart Williams (722 runs, avg 72.20) and Devon Smith (750 runs, avg 62.50) to challenge Darren Ganga for the opening spot in the Test team.

Grenadian Junior Murray, who helped himself to 722 runs (avg 72.20) also got a recall and will likely be chosen for the Test series as the back-up to Ridley Jacobs behind the stumps.

Reon King, the Guyana pacer who took 19 wickets at 32.89 in the tournament, was also left out in the cold. Instead, the selectors rewarded youngsters Adam Sandford (37 wickets), Gareth Breeze (35 wickets), Marlon Black (33 wickets) and Darrel Powell (23 wickets) and Pedro Collins.

Guyana middle order batsman Lennox Cush, who came on late with back-to-back centuries in his 408 aggregate, would also be considering himself unlucky not to find a place as was Ian Jan (528 runs), Azeemul Hanniff (502) and Kerk Wilkinson (486).

Other missing names which raised some eyebrows included Neil McGarrell (31 wkts; 20.80 and 237 runs; 33.85), Sherwyn Campbell (237 runs; 59.29)

Kerry Jeremy (39 wkts; 17.35), who was selected to attend the West Indies cricket academy this year, was also not selected.

Leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine, who has been dogged by injuried in recent times, was included in the squad for the training camp, which will be held in his native Trinidad and Tobago from March 21 to 28.

Ramnarine, who has taken 45 wickets in 12 Test matches for the West Indies was named along with with Guyanese leggie Mahendra Nagamootoo, who led all wicket-takers with 41 scalps.

"All members of the squad, especially Lara and Sarwan, will be subject to fitness and medical examinations prior and during the camp before they become eligible for selection," said WICB CEO Gregory Shillingford.
