Kallicharran: 'Harper Was a Mediocre Player'

Former Guyana and West Indian batsman Alvin Kallicharran has come out swinging at the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and Roger Harper, describing the coach as "a mediocre player" who never accomplished anything at the highest level.

"The West Indies Cricket Board in itself, they want people they can control. What is Roger Harper doing being the coach of West Indies cricket? He was a mediocre player - he didn't accomplish anything. When he was playing, he was always asking people for advice, how to coach him," Kallicharran said.

Kallicharran, a little left-hander who appeared in 66 Tests for the West Indies, scoring 4,399 runs (avg. 44.43), also slammed the WICB for not making use of the services of former cricketing greats like Mikey Holding, Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge.

In an interview with Wisden Online, the former West Indies captain said he was among former West Indies greats two years ago at a game in honour of the late Malcolm Marshall and realised that not a single player was in any way involved with the game in the Caribbean.

Kallicharran, who just celebrated his 53rd birthday, said he was in conversation with Holding, Richards, Greenidge, Andy Roberts, Desmond Haynes, Colin Croft and Joel Garner. "When we looked at it, not one of us was involved with West Indies cricket. Not any single one."
