Findlay, Carew Among Nominees but...

Hold the obituaries! The careers of Mike Findlay and Joey Carew as West Indies team selectors may not be over yet.

According to WICB insiders, Findlay and Carew were among seven nominees for the West Indies selection panel, which will be chosen on May 25. But, barring a last-minute change of heart among WICB directors, CaribbeanCricket.com understands the three-man panel will be made up of Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge and Joey Carew.

Sources say an informal brainstorm session by members of the WICB cricket sub-committee decided to recommend the trio of Richards, Greenidge and Carew to handle the duties of senior West Indies team selection.

As first reported here, there was a strong lobby for a slate comprising former Test cricketers Andy Roberts, Joe Solomon and Maurice Foster with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) promising its full support.

But, the cricket sub committee, which is chaired by Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) boss Jackie Hendricks, opted to recommend a panel comprising Richards, Greenidge and Carew.

If all goes according to plan Carew, a Trinidadian who played in 19 Tests between 1963 and 1972, would be the only returning selector from the previous panel. Current chairman, Mike Findlay, who was nominated by the Windwards Islands, "is most definitely out of the running," one source said.

The other member of the current panel, Barbadian Joel Garner, was not nominated. Instead, the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) opted for Greenidge, who was a teammate of Garner in the successful West Indies teams of the 1980s.

All three members of the current junior selection panel -- Clyde Butts (chairman), Robert Haynes and Ezra Moseley -- have been renominated. Sources say Nevisian Derek Parry, Trinidad's Tony Gray and Barbadian Roland Holder are also in the running for the junior panel, which selects the West Indies Under-15 and Under-19 teams.
