Lara Bribery Allegations Report Complete

A report into whether West Indian batsman Brian Lara took bribes has been handed to the West Indies Cricket Board, which said it plans to comment on its findings soon.

Elliott Motley conducted the investigation for the WICB after an Indian bookmaker accused Lara, who hit record scores in Test and first-class cricket, of taking $40,000 for playing badly in two one-day internationals in 1994.

Lara denies the allegations, which came in a separate report into corruption by India's Central Bureau of Investigation published in November 2000. Five cricketers have received life bans for involvement in corruption since May of that year.

"I'm currently reading the report, which is quite extensive, and then I shall be making a statement," WICB President Wes Hall said. "Before then I don't wish to comment on the findings."

Other cricket authorities commissioned similar investigations after the bookmaker, Mukesh Gupta, made his allegations.

Boards from Australia, England, Sri Lanka and New Zealand exonerated their players when Gupta declined to meet a deadline to give evidence in July last year.
