W.I Under-19 All Star Squad Named
Trinidad and Tobago fast bowling phenom Ravi Rampaul was named
MVP of the regional Under-19 tournament and was named to headline
an 14-man All Star squad to prepare for a possible tour to India
later this year.
The 17-year-old Rampaul, who finished the three-day version of the
tournament with a record 45 wickets (avg. 7.2 per) walked away with
three individual awards but was was the only Trinidad & Tobago
player named in the squad, which features four Jamaicans.
Rampaul won awards for his record-breaking wicket tally, the MVP
award and a special prize for this mind-boggling record of 10
wickets for six runs in the match against a team representing the
Americas.
Barbados middle order batsman Martin Nurse (334 runs, avg. 41.75,
HS 90) was the leading run scorer while Leewards wicketkeeper
Gareth Matthwes won the prize for the best fielder. Xavier Marshall
of Jamaica won the best all-rounder prize. Marshall finished the
tournament with 269 runs (avg. 53.80).
Barbados won the three-day version of the tournament while the
Windward Islands won the limited overs version.
Immediately following the tournament, the junior West Indies
selection panel -- Clyde Butts, Ezra Moseley and Derek Parry --
picked a 14-man All-Star squad that could make a tour to India
later this year.
