Kalli: Windies Incompetence is Sad

Former West Indies captain Alvin Kallicharran believes there is no way the Caribbean side can win the upcoming Three-test series against India or do well in the World Cup tournament because of incompetence.

"India is in top form and Lara's absence will leave a big vacuum because even though he may not do much, he still is a force to reckon with. Being West Indian, I would love to root for them. But judging the way they are playing, there is no way they will win," Kallicharran said.

In an interview with the MidDay publication, the Guyanese batsman-turned-coach believes there is no way the West Indies team can progress far in the upcoming World Cup. "Judging by the way they are playing, you would not think about them competing in the World Cup. They have to improve by 200 per cent. They are incompetent and that is sad," he said.

Kallicharran, who averaged 44.43 in 66 Tests for the West Indies, blamed the WICB for not putting structures in place to improve the game in the Caribbean. "Though I am not involved now, I do follow their fortunes. There are so many things going wrong with cricket there. They talk about western sports influencing children and migration but the Board never had a structure in place. There remains lots to be done."

The left-hander, who led a rebel side to apartheid South Africa after a career 10-year career with the West Indies, just signed a deal to promote Omtex Sportswear in the United Kingdom, where he lives.

He made two tours to India during his playing days -- in 1974-75 under Clive Lloyd and in 1978-79 when he led an undermanned team to a series loss.
