Chennai By The Numbers

With the second Test scheduled for Chennai (Madras) tomorrow, our statistical guru Zito takes a look at the Test matches played between the two sides at this venue.

India and West Indies have played at Chennai on six occasions. The last time the two sides met in 1987-88, Viv Richards' West Indies lost to Ravi Shastri's side by 255 runs, thus drawing the four Test series 1-1. That match was made famous by 19-year-old Narendra Hirwani's match haul of 16 for 136, the best figures by a bowler on Test debut. The West Indies have not won at Chennai since the sole victory in the debut series of 1948-49 between the two sides. Out of the six matches, India won three and drew two.

Sachin Tendulkar tops the batting average with 655 runs at 109.17 (4 centuries). Bishan Bedi tops the bowling average (31 wickets at 17.26; Best Bowling 5-48) while Kapil Dev has the most wickets (40 wickets at 27.30; Best Bowling 7-56). For West Indies, Andy Roberts has the most wickets and best bowling average (13 wickets at 15.54 with best figure of 7-64).
