Lawson, Breese Set for Test Debut

The West Indies have named fast bowler Jermaine Lawson and off-spin bowler Gareth Breese in the 12-man squad to face India in the second Test starting at Chennai on Thursday (Wednesday night local time).

The management team on tour -- comprising chief selector Viv Richards, captain Carl Hooper and coach Roger Harper -- dropped leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo from the first Test eleven and drafted in Breese and Lawson into the 12 for the final Test. Both are expected to play with Cuffy being the candidate for the axe.

Nagamootoo picked up three wickets in the only Indian inning of the first Test and looked out-of-sorts as a batsman. Cuffy, too, struggled in the first Test.

Breese, an off-spinner from Jamaica, has taken 99 wickets in 33 first class games (avg. 21.37, best bowling 7-60). He has scored one first class century and 7 fifties in 1,156 runs (avg. 26.88).

Lawson, also from Jamaica, is a promising fast bowler who has appeared in 18 first class matches. He has 49 first class scalps, at 30.71 per (best bowling 6-76). Lawson played in two ODIs for the senior West Indies team on the 2001/02 tour of Sri Lanka.
