Greenidge Lands Bangladesh Role

Gordon Greenidge will be the "technical" coach for the Bangladesh team in a short-term appointment leading up to the World Cup, BBC Sports reported.

The West Indies batting legend, who is now a senior West Indies team selector, had served Bangladesh's coach before being fired during the 1999 World Cup in England. Greenidge will be with the Bangladesh team as they tour Namibia up until the end of January.

The short tour to the southern African country neighbouring South Africa will be Bangladesh's main preparation ahead of the big tournament starting in early February.

The BBC reported that Greenidge's re-appearance has led to speculation that he will take over from incumbent team coach Mohsin Kamal after the World Cup. At the very least, Kamal will feel pressurised to win a match or two at the tournament.

Mahbub Anam, chairman of Bangladesh's cricket committee, said Greenidge had not been the only target for the short-term appointment.

"We also had approached Barry Richards and a few other people. But we found our talks with Gordon go so well and he landed the job," according to the BBC report.
