WICB Gets Carib Beer Sponsorship Deal

As previously reported by CaribbeanCricket.com, Ansa McAl's Carib Beer subsidiary will replace Busta as the new sponsors of the West Indies four-day tournament.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced the Trinidad-based Carib Beer had inked a five-year deal to become the Title Sponsor of the West Indies four-day first-class championship. It has now been renamed the Carib Beer Cricket Series.

Like the preceding Busta Cup, which it is replacing, the Carib Beer Cricket championship will involve two stages to decide, first, the Carib Beer Cup (top territorial team) and, subsequently, the winner of the Carib Beer International Challenge.

Carib Beer previously served as Official Sponsor of the West Indies team to the 1999 World Cup in Britain and the tour of the U.K a year later.

Eight teams will contest the series this year: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and Windward Islands, West Indies 'B' (Under-23s) and India 'A' (international invitee).

CARIB BEER CRICKET SERIES 2003 RULES/FORMAT:

COMPETITION FORMAT

TEAMS:
Eight teams will contest the CARIB BEER CRICKET SERIES 2003, the West Indies four-day first-class championship:

Territorial Teams: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Windward Islands
West Indies Under-23 Team: West Indies B-Team
International Invitee: India A-Team

STRUCTURE:

The CARIB BEER CRICKET SERIES will involve two stages that will determine the CARIB BEER CUP winners (top territorial team) and, subsequently, the winner of the CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE.

CARIB BEER CUP
The first stage will entail a league competition with each team playing all others once. All eight teams will participate with all matches counting for points:

i. All points earned by the Territorial Teams (including against West Indies-B and India-A) will count fully towards their standings in the CARIB BEER CUP.

ii. West Indies-B and India-A will earn "shadow points" based on the same scoring system that count only towards their qualification for the second stage.

The winner of the CARIB BEER CUP will be the Territorial Team with the highest number of points at the end of the league competition.

If there is an equality of points (for any position), each team?s position will be decided by, in order of priority:

1. the result of their head-to-head meeting,

2. the team with the most outright wins, and

3. if there remains equality after applying (1) and (2) above, then the position will be decided by average, calculated thus:

a. Divide the total runs scored by a team by the total number of wickets lost.

b. Divide the total number of runs against a team by the total number of wickets it captured.

c. Divide (a) by (b). The team having the higher percentage shall be considered to have the better performance.

d. For the purpose of the calculations and for individual averages, a team declaring its innings closed shall be deemed to have lost only the number of wickets they actually lost.

e. Please note that if a match in the league competition ends in a no-result, the scores from that match will not be included in this calculation.

CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE

i. At the conclusion of the league competition, the four highest ranked teams will contest two semi-finals, the CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE semi-finals.

ii. The team placed first in the league competition will play at home against the team placed fourth, while the team placed second in the league competition will play at home against the team placed third.

iii. The winners of the two semi-finals will contest the CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Final.

iv. a) The team that either wins its semi-final outright, or wins on first innings in a drawn match, will proceed to the CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Final.

b) If the result in a semi-final is a tie, the winner will be decided by applying the tie-breakers set out in (1), (2) and (3a) to (3e) under the heading CARIB BEER CUP.

c) If the teams' scores are tied on first innings, but the match is drawn, the winner will be decided by applying the tie-breakers set out in (1), (2) and (3a) to (3e) under the heading CARIB BEER CUP.

d) If the semi-finals end in a no-result (Abandoned Match), the winner will be decided by applying the tie-breakers set out in (1), (2) and (3a) to (3e) under the heading CARIB BEER CUP.

Hosting The CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Final

The team hosting the CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Final will be the semi-final winner that had the highest ranking at the end of the league competition.

CARIB BEER INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Winner

i. The team that wins the final outright, or wins on first innings in a drawn match, will be declared the winner.

ii. If the teams' scores are tied on first innings, but the match is drawn, then the two teams will be named Joint Champions.

iii. If the final ends in a tie, then the two teams will be named Joint Champions.

iv. If the final ends in a no-result, then the two teams will be named Joint Champions.
