Shane Jeffers to Captain Windies 'B'
Kittitian left-handed opening batsman Shane Jeffers has been named skipper of the West Indies 'B' team for the 2003 Carib Beer Cricket Series.
The junior West Indies selectors, chaired by Clyde Butts, also named Guyanese Narsingh Deonarine and pacer Reon Thomas in the 13-man Under-13 team that opens up against India 'A' in Barbados on January 31.
Deonarine, a two-time West Indies Under-19 selectee, who has also represented the West Indies 'A' team, played three matches for the Guyana national team in last year's Busta Cup, scoring 96 runs at an average of 32.00.
Thomas, a strong fast bowler who participated in the recent fast bowlers' camp in Antigua, toured England with the West Indies Under-19 side in 2001 and is a graduate of the West Indies Shell Academy.
The captain, Shane Jeffers, scored 381 runs at an average of 29.30 with two half-centuries for the 'B' team in last year's tournament.
Two wicketkeeper/batsmen in Carlton Baugh of Jamaica and Patrick Browne of Barbados have been named in the team, which will be managed by Vincentian Alfred Bynoe and coached by Barbadian Roddy Estwick.
Browne, who toured England with the West Indies Under-19 team in 2001, impressed cricket fans at the Carlton Club ground with a stroke-filled unbeaten 66 for a Past and Present West Indies XI in a night match on Tuesday.
He played in all seven matches for the ?B? team last year, and hit half-centuries against the Leeward Islands and Guyana but his selection was not expected as he was not recommended by the Barbados selectors.
Two other Barbadians, 17-year-old left-handed opener Martin Nurse and fast bowler Jason Bennett were also selected as well as Trinidad and Tobago?s middle order batsmen Denzil James, Gregory Mahabir and Aneil Kanhai.
The squad is completed by Jamaican pacer Andrew Richardson, Leeward Islander Lionel Baker and Trinidadian spinner Amit Jaggernauth.
