Chanderpaul Out of ODI Series

Experienced West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul will miss the entire seven-game ODI series against Australia because of a broken finger on his left hand.

The Guyanese left-hander, who made a scintillating century with the broken finger in the fourth Test match, underwent surgery on Wednesday in Jamaica and will be out of action for at least six weeks.

A replacement has not yet been named. The selectors could turn to opener Wavell Hinds, who was surprisingly left out from the initial squad or even Gareth Breese, who has proven to be a competent all-rounder.

Chanderpaul could possibly miss the upcoming Test and ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The one-day series against Australia begins in Jamaica this weekend with a pair of back-to-back games. The absence of Chanderpaul paves the way for both Marlon Samuels and Ricardo Powell to return to the ODI side.

Powell was an early success at the World Cup in February but faded in the end while the classy Samuels sat out the majority of the tournament.
