Guyana Overcomes Simmons Ton

Guyana's Red Stripe Bowl campaign got off to a successful start in Antigua on Wednesday with a 14-run win over the Young West Indies side but a swashbuckling century by Trinidadian Lendl Simmons put a scare into the Guyanese.

Simmons smacked an even 100 as the Under-19 side, chasing 253 for victory, made an enterprise run at the target but there was not enough support to pull off the upset.

Earlier, Guyana captain Shiv Chanderpaul hit a quickfire 66 to lead his side to 252 for six off 50 overs. Opener Ryan Ramdass supported with 62 and Narsingh Deonarine chipped in with an aggressive 39.

For Young West Indies, pacer Ravi Rampaul took 2 for 27 off ten overs while left-arm spinner took 3-44.

FINAL SCORES: Guyana 252-6 from 50 overs (Shiv Chanderpaul 66, Ryan Ramdass 62, Narsingh Deonarine 39, Sewnarine Chattergoon 34; Rishi Bachan 3-44, Ravi Rampaul 2-27).

Young West Indies 238-8 from 50 overs (Lendl Simmons 100, Assad Fudadin 29, Ravi Rampaul 22; Mahendra Nagamootoo 4-50, Rayon Griffith 2-23).
