Sabina Park Escapes Ivan's Fury

World Cup 2007 organisers are breathing a huge sigh of relief this week after one of its key venues -- Jamaica's Sabina Park -- emerged from the fury of Hurricane Ivan with only minor damages.

CaribbeanCricket.com correspondent Michelle McDonald reports that there were no visible structural damages to any part of the Sabina facility. Except for a few lost zinc sheets from the George Headley stand and a few broken billboards, Sabina Park remained unscathed.

Organisers had feared that significant damage to Sabina Park would have put the entire tournament in jeopardy, especially since another venue -- Grenada's New Queen's Park -- was badly destroyed by the storm.

"A few advertising signs and a gate were broken down and some zinc sheets are missing but that's about it," reported McDonald, who is on the Caribbean island.

Jamaica is slated to host the 'Yellow Package' of the tournament, which includes the opening ceremony and all first round matches of the West Indies team. The package also includes one of the two semi-final games.
