T&T - 2004 One-Day Champs!

Daren Ganga's injury-riddled Trinidad & Tobago are the 2004 regional one day champions.

Led by man-of-the-match Richard Kelly and level-headed batting by Imran Jan, the undermanned Trinidad & Tobago completed a four-wicket win over defending champions Guyana to lift the President's Cup at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

It was a well-deserved triumph for Ganga's men, who played the tournament without several key players -- Brian Lara, Merv Dillon, Dwayne Bravo, Ravi Rampaul, Dave Mohammed and Lendl Simmons.

In a topsy turvy game, Ganga won the toss and put Guyana in to bat, a decision that immediately paid dividends when Guyana crashed for 19 for four by the sixth over.

West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul (43), batting with a hand injury, stemmed the tide in an 88-run fifth wicket partnership with Damodar Daesrath (49) as Guyana recovered to reach 160 all out from 44.4 overs.

Reyad Emrit was the bowling hero, finishing with 4-27 while Kelly picked up 2-26.

The Trinidadians were brilliant in the field with Daren Ganga and Shazam Babwah scoring direct hit run-outs to put the pressure on the Guyanese.

Trinidad & Tobago got off to a rocky start as pacers Reon King and Esaun Crandon set the cat among the pigeons, getting rid of the dangerous Sherwin Ganga early. When Ricardo Powell went for a duck and wicket-keeper Dinesh Ramdin was removed by King, the T&T score was 83-6 and Guyana appeared to be in the driver's seat.

But Imran Jan had other ideas. The left-hander, who has struggled for runs throughout the tournament, took control of the game with an unbeaten 54. Kelly was a valuable partner in an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 78 as the Trinidadians won comfortably with overs to spare.

The champion Trinidadians swept the individual prizes with captain Ganga adjudged the best fielder; Dinesh Ramdin the best wicketkeeper and Sherwin Ganga winning prizes for best batsman and best bowler. Kelly won the finals MVP trophy.

"We don't have any stars on this team. We played as a team all the way. That was the key to winning," said Jan, just moments after hitting the winning run.

Captain Ganga echoed that sentiment. "Everyone played well throughout competition. This is reward for all the hard work we've put in...We know that to win this competition, we had to field well. We took control of the game from the start with our fielding," Ganga said.

"It was a marvellous, marvellous achievement. I have confidence in all ten guys in my team. Imran and Kelly pulled it off for us. Imran has been struggling but today he came good. That's that's what a team is all about," Ganga added.
