King Stands by Marshall Pick

West Indies head coach Bennett King is standing by his decision to use the one-day arena to introduce teenage batsman Xavier Marshall to international cricket.

"I believe that the One-Day game is probably the best facility to introduce him into cricket," King insisted. "You haven't seen the best of Xavier Marshall. We're very cognisant of how we are trying to introduce him into the national side."

The Jamaican right-hander has looked hopelessly lost since he was plucked from the youth ranks to debut in last year's VB triangular series in Australia. In six ODI matches for the regional side, he has scored just 39 runs, average 6.50.

His failures have led to calls around the region for the 19 year old to be pulled from the senior side and allowed to develop in the lower ranks but the West Indies head coach and chief selector is dismissing that suggestion.

"I don't think he is going to get the experience that he needs at regional cricket. He can 'monster' the bowling down there and get some runs," King said.

"He is a player for the future. Whether the future is right now, the jury is out. I think he has some technical issues that he needs to work out before he's a success," the West Indies coach added.

Marshall has been left out of the Test squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan.
