Lloyd Nominated for VP Slot

The next president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will be Ken Gordon. The vice presidency will be a straight race between former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd and the incumbent Val Banks.

Gordon, former Trinidad & Tobago Cabinet minister who is best known as an inveterate fighter for press freedom in the Caribbean, was the sole nominee for the presidency. He becomes the first WICB president from the twin-island republic since Jeffrey Stollmeyer held the post in the 1970s.

It is not yet clear if Lloyd will accept the vice presidency. CaribbeanCricket.com understands that the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) belatedly seconded Guyana's nomination of Lloyd for the presidency but a legal mix-up ensued because there was already a full nomination of Lloyd for the vice presidency.

A candidate cannot be on the ballot for both positions.

If Lloyd is willing to serve as Gordon's deputy, he might find it tough to beat out Banks, the Anguillan banker who served as vice president under both Wes Hall and the departing Teddy Griffith.

Guyana and Barbados will be pushing for Lloyd while Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the Leewards are backing Banks to continue in the post. The wild card is the Windward Islands.

Banks and Griffith both own individual votes outside of the two each that will be cast by the regional member boards.

The election of a President and Vice President will be the main items on the agenda for the Sixth Annual General Meeting of the WICB, which will be held in St. Maarten on August 7.

Other items on the agenda include the consideration of Financial Statements and Report of the Directors and Auditors for the year ended 30 September, 2004 and the election of Directors nominated by Members. The meeting may also consider any other business that has properly come before it.

On the day prior to the meeting, the directors of the WICB will hold their third regular meeting for 2005.
