Lauderhill, Trelawny Partner for Cricket

The City of Lauderhill in Florida has commenced a sister city relationship with Falmouth, Jamaica to use the newly constructed stadium in Trelawny to promote cricket in Jamaica and the USA.

The new partnership kicks off with the very first match at the Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium on Saturday, September 30 with the first annual Air Jamaica Cup.

The inaugural match is an international competition between a USA Invitational XI and the Jamaican national team. A sister city match will take place on Friday, September 29 between the Lauderhill XI and the Trelawny XI.

The opening of a stadium in the Parish of Trelawny was envisioned to generate tourism through first-class international sporting activities such as the 2007 Cricket World Cup games. It served as an impetus for private developers to construct new hotels, retail stores, and additional housing in the Parish.

According to officials, these opportunities mirrors those envisioned by Lauderhill and Central Broward in Florida.

The Broward County Regional Park, also with a multi-purpose stadium, is an economic development engine where state football competitions and international soccer and cricket tournaments will take place drawing thousands of visitors to the area.

The Lauderhill facility is expected to open sometime late 2007.
