Haynes Quits BCA Post

Desmond Haynes is out as first vice president of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA).

According to a report in the Barbados Nation, the former West Indies opener resigned from the post just 14 months after defeating David Holford in an election that significantly shifted the balance of power in Barbados cricket.

"This is to inform you that I am no longer able to serve on the current BCA board of management. I have concluded that I, and the majority of the board do not share the same standard for corporate governance and respect for the mandate to uphold the good name of the BCA," Haynes said in a brief six-line letter dated October 15.

"I therefore resign from the position of first vice-president with immediate effect."

Haynes, who resigned as secretary of the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) to accept the BCA post, has also lost his seat on the WICB where he served as a director.

Back in July, he was also replaced as chairman of the NSC (National Sports Council) in Barbados, a post now held by UWI's Dr Hilary Beckles.

According to the newspaper report, the sudden resignation may have been prompted after recent events at a board meeting.

At that meeting, board members voted for the removal of BCA president Tony Marshall as chairman of two committees, while a recommendation by the cricket development committee for a new chairman of the selection panel did not win favour.

Last week, when Marshall attended a meeting of the WICB directors in Antigua, the BCA issued a press release stating that second vice-president Owen Estwick would act as president in Marshall's absence without mentioning Haynes, the report said.

In 116 Tests between 1978 and 1994, Haynes scored 7,487 runs (avg. 42.29) with 18 centuries. He also appeared in 238 ODIs, scoring 8,648 runs with 17 tons (avg. 41.37).
