Sarwan: Possibility of same XI for Headingley

West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has dropped a strong hint that the West Indies will go into the second Test match against England at Headingley with an unchanged side..

"We haven't decided on that at this time. This afternoon we will be giving Mr. Gordon Greenidge [a call] and decide on the team we want to play tomorrow. The possibility is most likely we will go into the game with the same team," Sarwan said. Excerpts of Sarwan's chat with journalists:

On whether the team feels more prepared going into the second Test:

There was a lot of talking about us not getting too much match practice leading up to the first Test match but now we have spent a lot of time in the middle bowling and batting and we have come a long way it is now for us to execute our plans.

On whether the Windies will go into the second Test with greater confidence than England:

I think we played very competitively throughout the Test match, we were 187 for 5 at one stage and we showed some sort of fight and that is something that has been lacking in us for some time now. It's very important that we continue to compete and play well as a team. When I got to England I said that I need us to be much more consistent than we've been in the past. We've scored 437, we don't want to score 160 now.

It is important that we continue to build on the 437 and continue to get better as a team. Playing so well at Lord's meant a lot to us. A lot was said about us that we would probably lose the Test match and for us to draw a Test match at Lord's meant a lot to us. It would give us momentum going into this game.

On Michael Vaughan:

I can remember when I was much younger he captained England and it's really good to play against people you look up to. He's been very good for England unfortunately he has been in and out of the team because of injury. He usually does a good job with the team and gets everyone in good spirit and that's important as a captain. I think it's important for us to execute our plan against him. He is the sort of player who when he gets set he tends to get very big scores.

On whether the Headingley pitch may be more conducive for the West Indian bowlers:

A few years ago when we played here and the Test match was finished in two days it was much better (for bowling) than what we see now. The pitches we've practiced on (next to the Test pitch) seems to be much slower and when you look at the Test pitch it seems to have a similar look on it. There would be a bit if turn on it I would think.

I think the conditions here (in Headingley) has a lot to do with the swing bowling so it's important that we bowl consistent line and length and hold our chances when they come. Generally in England you have to bowl a full length because the ball tends to do a lot more than the Caribbean. In the second innings at Lord's we bowled quite a few short balls, in the first innings we were very hesitant about it and a couple of their players looked very shy so that's probably a tactic we might be using in this game.

On whether Monty Panesar will continue to be a threat:

I think it's very important that we play positively against him. We hadn't played him before Lord's so he was quite new to most of us. He didn't get many wickets with the turning ball but get got a lot of wickets with his arm ball and that is something that we'll be looking at.

On whether specific plans were formulated for the lower order to bat longer:

We spoke about it. We said that you guys (the lower order) have to play a part in the batting as well and it's important that everyone contributes to the effort. That's something we've stressed since coming here. It's not only for this tour but for other tours as well. We need to work as a team and have everyone contribute.

On whether England missing Andrew Flintoff is a benefit for the Windies:

It is. We know the sort of cricketer he is, he is one of their match winners. I'm sure they are going to miss him. He's an outstanding cricketer but we don't want to worry about him now, we have quite a few guys who we will be playing against and our task would be to try and negotiation those guys.

On whether the West Indies were surprised that the England bowlers were not as penetrative as was anticipated:

One of the things we're trying to do is to stay on top of their main bowlers. We saw when Australia played them they were positive against (Steve) Harmison and we have the similar type of approach. We'll have a better feel of Monty (Panesar) in this game so it's important that we try and stay on top.

On the banter between Kevin Pieterson and Chris Gayle in the first Test match:

The way Kevin plays, sometimes he's unstoppable. You just have to get the ball in the right areas. It's important when we bowl against him to contain he because he scores so quickly. He's one of those players who can take the game away from you in the blink of an eye. It's important that we execute well against him.

They both were having a go at each other but it was in a friendly manner. Actually after the game we went to get something to eat together so it's really good to see that the game can be played in good spirit.
