Ganga: Let's limit our mistakes
West Indies captain Daren Ganga said the Caribbean side must cut down on mistakes if it is to save face in the final Test against England.
"We are trying to limit the amount of mistakes that we are making and making the same mistakes over and over again," Ganga said during a session with reporters. Some excerpts:
On what the assessment of the third Test has been:
We didn't respond well in critical areas of the game. When we assessed the game we fell down on certain areas where we needed not to. Our batting in the first innings and our fielding left a lot to be desired and those aspects of the game would have made an impact on the outcome.
On Darren Sammy's injury:
At the moment he is going to be a part of our training session today (Thursday) so an assessment would be made with regard to his availability for this Test.
On the need for the fielding to improve:
We took on board a specialist fielding coach for this tour. The unfortunate thing is that we weren't able to have a training camp before we came across here. Our fielding has been something that we have fell down in in a lot of tournaments – One Day and Test cricket.
With the introduction of our new fielding coach –Julien Fountain – we have been working very hard as a team to improve but improvement will not happen overnight. It is something that we will continue working at and hopefully you will see a drastic improvement in this Test match.
On the weather and conditions looking more like Headingley and Old Trafford:
We were aware that the weather might play a part in this Test match, it's something beyond our control. We have the Headingley experience behind us so we are aware of what the English players can do in English conditions. We are trying to limit the amount of mistakes that we are making and making the same mistakes over and over again.
On the conditions likely to be wet and cold:
We're not accustomed to playing in seven degrees and the swinging ball in the Caribbean. It is important that we feed off one another, a lot of talk has been going around our dressing room with regards to adapting and dealing with situations like this.
On whether Daren Powell will come into reckoning for a place in the final XI:
Before the last Test match it was really tough leaving Daren Powell out. He was one of our better bowlers over the past year. Strong consideration will be given to him and the other bowlers. Ravi Rampaul will be the only person who will not be considered.
We lacked a bit of penetration in terms of getting twenty wickets. We were able to do that at Old Trafford, we actually created a lot more than twenty chances but we weren't able to hold on to all. It might be a four day Test match (with weather likely to affect the game) but we don't know and these are things we have to factor in. We'll be thinking very hard and coming up with the right combination for this game.
