WI players walk for AIDS awareness
West Indies cricketers are joining the fight to promote AIDS awareness.In collaboration the National Aids Coordinating Council (NACC) and the Joint UN Team on AIDS, the West Indies team will participate in a walk-a-thon around the Queen's Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain on Thursday August 16, 2007 at 4.45 p.m.
The walk-a-thon is aimed at sensitising members of the public on HIV. This collaboration is in keeping with an Agreement signed a year ago between WIPA and the UN Agencies to use the image and services of the West Indies cricketers to promote AIDS awareness, particularly among children.
The theme of this initiative is: "I am a Leader. HIV prevention begins with me!"
Participating in this event will be the current and past West Indies cricketers, members of the national cricket and football teams, approximately 200 specially-invited children from Children’s Homes, Corporate Executives and other members of the public.
The West Indies cricketers will also be participating in their Third Annual Charity Football Match hosted by WIPA at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium on Friday August 17, 2007 at 7.00 p.m. Their opponents will be the national Under-23 Football Team. As in the past years, the proceeds of this event will go to the WI Players' Benevolent Fund.
