David Williams named assistant coach
WICB PRESS RELEASE:The Board of Directors of the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) at its meeting in Barbados on August 25, 2007, as part of its thrust in cricket development, approved the participation of a Combined Campuses and Colleges Team (coordinated through the University of the West Indies) in all future Regional One-Day and Four-Day Tournaments.
The Board also agreed that a WICB-selected Under-19 Team will play in all future regional One Day Tournaments. The 20-member Training Squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup will play in this year’s KFC tournament. The regional season will start in with the One-Day tournament in October 2007 and end in July 2008.
ACADEMY:
In the context of cricket development, the Board also reviewed progress on the Cricket Academy which was approved at a previous meeting. Professor Hillary Beckles, Chairman of the Implementation Committee for the Academy, will hold a meeting of the Committee shortly.
In the meantime, sponsorship and registration of the Academy as a non-profit organisation is taking place.
PRO LEAGUE:
In the meantime, the WICB has established an internal committee on the urgent establishment of a professional league which will report by November 30. The members are: Deryck Murray (Chair) and Directors Paul Campbell, Jackie Hendricks and Gregory Shillingford.
MANAGEMENT TEAM TO SOUTH AFRICA:
The Board ratified the selection of Ramnaresh Sarwan as Captain and Chris Gayle as Vice Captain of the team for the ICC Twenty/20 Tournament which starts in South Africa on September 11. The Team Management for this tour comprises:
* Michael Findlay – Team Manager
* David Moore – Interim Head Coach
* David Williams – Assistant Coach
* Richard Smith – Fitness & Conditioning Coach
* Jacqueline King-Mowatt – Physiotherapist
* Imran Khan – Media Liaison Officer.
The President of the WICB, the Hon. Dr. Julian R. Hunte, who will be in South Africa on ICC-related business, will meet with the players and management before the series starts.
In collaboration with WIPA, Dr. Hunte and a security consultant recommended by the ICC will visit Zimbabwe to review arrangements for the safety and security of the West Indies team which is scheduled as part of the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) to tour Zimbabwe in November.
STANFORD 20/20:
While in South Africa, Dr. Hunte expects to meet with Sir Allen Stanford and other representatives of the Stanford 20/20 Organisation. Sir Allen has been invited by the ICC to the finals of the ICC World Twenty/20 on September 24, 2007. It is hoped that a meeting will be held among Sir Allen, ICC representatives and the WICB President, Hon. Dr. Julian R. Hunte on September 23, 2007 in Johannesburg.Regarding the proposed Stanford 20/20 regional tournament to be held in January – February 2008, a formal agreement has not yet been signed but the Board has included the event in its 2007 – 2008 cricket calendar.
MANAGEMENT AND STAFF AUDIT:
The Board agreed that while the Management and Staff Audit approved at its meeting on July 29, 2007, is taking place, it will advertise immediately for a new CEO to replace Bruce Aanensen whose resignation was accepted at Saturday’s meeting.
The Board has also agreed to work in conjunction with the WIPA on a Benevolent Fund for past players.
