Injured Gayle heading home to Caribbean
The West Indies Cricket Team will be without captain Chris Gayle for the rest of the ongoing tour of South Africa. Gayle, the powerful left-handed opening batsman and clever off-spin bowler – will be returning home to Jamaica.
Gayle is still recovering from a broken left thumb sustained in the second Test match. The rest of the team traveled from Johannesburg to Cape Town on Monday for the continuation of the five-match limited-overs series. Allrounder Dwayne Bravo will continue as captain for the rest of the tour.
“We will miss his excellent skills and in this modern game he is a destroyer on the bowling. He would be have been an immense boost to the team, but this gives an opportunity for the younger players to show their mettle and step up to the plate.”
Gayle wished the players all the best in the four matches left.
“I have spoken with the guys and they understand perfectly. I have wished all the players the best. I know they will give their best and try to win the series.
“We will be hosting Sri Lanka and Australia in the coming months and I definitely want to be 100 percent for those matches,” Gayle said.
The West Indies lost the first One-Day International by 6 wickets at Centurion on Sunday. The second match will be in Cape Town on Friday night. The other matches are: at Port Elizabeth on Sunday January 27th, at Durban on Friday, February 1st and the final match at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday, February 3rd.
The Windies lost the Test series 1-2, while they shared the Pro20 Series 1-1.
