Reon King joins Guyana squad as assistant coach
At the request of captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, former West Indies fast bowler Reon King has been added to the Guyana squad as an assistant coach to work with the team's young fast bowlers.
During the recent Stanford 20/20 tournament in Antigua, Sarwan told the media that he had made several requests for the board to consider adding King to the squad to mentor and assist the likes of Brandon Bess, Trevon Garraway and Jeremy Gordon.
Guyana has opted for a deliberate rebuilding policy this year, excluding veterans like Mahendra Nagamootoo, Neil McGarrell and Lennox Cush in favour of younger players.
Sarwan says that while he understood the need to adopt a rebuilding policy, he would have preferred to be leading a team with a better balance of youth and experience.
While making it clear he was not criticising the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Sarwan said the absence of the veteran players was one of the main reason the team has struggled badly this year.
Guyana has lost all three of its Carib Beer Cup games this season.
Separately, Sarwan said he was recovering well from the ankle injury suffered during Guyana''s KFC Cup Challenge late last year.
"The ankle injury is about 95 percent healed and there is no worry with it at present. It has been a while, nursing this injury but since arriving in Antigua and meeting up with physiotherapist Stephen Partridge, I have progressed a lot.
"Partridge has done a lot of work with me, as far as the injury is concerned and I am ready for the rigours of international cricket again," Sarwan added.
