Sussex snaps up Dwayne Smith
Dwayne Smith will join fellow Barbadian Corey Collymore at Sussex on a short-term contract.The English County champions announced on Tuesday that they have signed the all-rounder for the duration of the domestic Twenty20 competition as a replacement for injured former Pakistan leg-spin bowler Mushtaq Ahmed.
“Obviously, we are excited to have Dwayne join us,” remarked Sussex coach Mark Robinson in a news release from the club.“We’ve had to move quickly on this following injury to Mushy, and at a day’s notice, I feel we have gained a high quality player.
“Dwayne impressed in the World Cup last year playing for the West Indies, and he is also a teammate of Corey, so we have been able to gain a good inside knowledge of him.”
Robinson added that the County also felt they will benefit from the signing, after Luke Wright fulfils his international assignments.
“The fact that he bowls, bats, and fields means he will, in theory, be like for like replacement for Luke when he joins England,” Robinson said.
The 25-year-old Smith has played in 10 Tests and 71 One-day Internationals for West Indies, and he has just completed a stint in the Indian Premier League, where he played four matches for the Mumbai Indians with limited success, scoring 45 runs and taking five wickets.
