Gayle: The batting was a disappointment

West Indies captain Chris Gayle said he was extremely disappointed with the way some of his batsmen got out as they chased 204 runs from 41overs after the Duckworth/Lewis Calculations shifted the Australian total of 213 for 5 from 50 overs.

"We put ourselves in a good position restricting them to 213 but the batting again was a big disappointment with the way some of the guys got out," Gayle said as the West Indies capitulated to 58 for 6 before a 55 minute rain interval after 37 overs. They only got to 140 for 8 from the allotted 41 overs as Shivnarine Chanderpaul played a valiant hand but in vain to remain unbeaten on 45 at the end.

"It's a must win for us now with three games ahead of us," the 28 year old Jamaican said after losing two games in a row. West Indies lost the Second Digicel ODI by 63 runs at the Grenada National Stadium and the First Digicel ODI by 84 runs at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex in St Vincent.

"It (Grenada National Stadium pitch) was a bit difficult to bat on, it was a bit two paced but once you're stuck in there you have to work hard for your runs on that sort of wicket, we just didn't have the patience today," said Gayle who made 10 from 24 balls before he himself got out to a reckless shot.

At the post-match presentation ceremony Gayle agreed with host Tony Cozier who suggested that the West Indian batsmen should have learnt how to bat on the difficult pitch from Australians Michael Hussey and Man of the Match Michael Clarke who grafted for 62 and 56 respectively. The pair added an even hundred for the fourth wicket after Australia found themselves in dire straits at 35 for 3 after 9 probing and penetrative overs from pacers Jerome Taylor (10-2-47-2) and Daren Powell (10-2-29-1).

"Both of them (Hussey and Clarke) changed the game for (Australia) and stuck to the task and got a partnership going but we didn't get that going in our batting department so we will see what happens in the next game," a hopeful Gayle said.

Asked whether the West Indies selectors will bring in any players as cover for the injured trio of Gayle himself, vice captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chanderpaul, Gayle said the squad will remain as is until after the Third Digicel ODI.

"The (current) squad is for the first three games, we don't know what the selectors are going to decide maybe tomorrow (Saturday) or whenever so we'll see what happens when they come together," Gayle said.
