Matthew Hayden was a bridge between the old and new world of cricket — a mercurial Aussie batsman who once challenged an opponent to a fistfight during a studio TV interview.
It was left to Hayden to provide the pull-quote pointing to where the game was headed.
“I have seen God,” he announced. “He bats No. 4 for India in Tests.”
To which the deity in this instance, Sachin Tendulkar, replied: “I make mistakes. God doesn’t.”
