PCL; Jaguars charge to consecutive titles
The Guyana Jaguars roared to back-to-back titles with an emphatic innings and 54-run victory against the Jamaica Scorpions with over day to spare in their final round PLC First-Class cricket contest at Providence yesterday in a game they had to win to claim their eighth Regional First-Class title.
The 10th round began with only the Jaguars and Barbados Pride in contention for the top spot and although the Bajans defeated the Leewards Hurricanes by an innings and 93 runs in St Kitts, the Jaguars were able to extend their unbeaten streak in PCL cricket to 17 with their record eighth win of the season.
Replying to Guyana’s first innings 420, Jamaica, holders of the most consecutive title (5 from 2008) lost their last five wickets for 62 runs after they began the penultimate day on 171-5 to be bowled out for 231.
Only Antiguan Devon Thomas (43) and Aldane Thomas (45), who shared in a 54-run sixth wicket partnership, offered any resistance to 20-year-old former West Indies U-19 left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (4-55), left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (2-43) and left-arm Bajan pacer Raymon Reifer (2-47).
Set 189 to make the Guyana Jaguars bat again, Jamaica catapulted to 134 as no batsman reached 25 in pathetic batting display by the depleted Jamaica Scorpions.
