The franchise system in sports is a master idea, and there is no doubt about it. The system brings more equality into sports - more balance, evenly matched teams, and better competition.
It also brings big business into sports and, therefore, more professionalism into sports, and probably even more importantly, it brings more money, much more money, into sports, writes Tony Becca.
But he also states that "West Indies cricket and franchising do not go hand in hand, and it seems, cannot go hand in hand for these few but very important reasons."

Fantastic article. The truth is the truth and will always be the truth.
Quality excerpts from the article:
Unlike America, England, and Australia, West Indies cricket is not played by one country. West Indies cricket is made up of many islands, many territories, playing as one team.
Yes, the West Indies is a special case. The islands are individual teams, and nothing can change that, regardless of the weak teams in West Indies cricket.
This year, Jamaica, for example, will contract, or has contracted, 15 players - 10 Jamaicans and five others from around the West Indies to play in the regional four-day tournament - and next year, if the WICB has the money, it may be the other way around.
It may well be only five Jamaicans, or fewer, in the Jamaica team - the team called Jamaica. In fact, according to WICB President Dave Cameron, the day may come - will come - when there are no Jamaicans on the Jamaica team.
Very, very troubling...........(applicable to all other teams in the region also)

According to the president of the WICB, the national associations have been asked to form another body, which will be asked to look after the professional system, the franchise system.
What then will be the function of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) and what will become of the JCA?
Another pertinent point....
On top of that, in England, Australia, India, and South Africa, and in all the Test-playing nations, first-class cricket is played by their nationals. Franchise cricket is razzle-dazzle cricket, at least for now. It is all about making money.
The truth is the truth.

Will Jamaicans give of their time to produce Jamaicans to represent another country? Will Jamaicans go to Sabina Park to see 11 foreigners representing Jamaica? And were the governments of Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, etcetera, asked if they, as sovereign countries, were comfortable with their countries represented by other nationals?
Dis is the clincher. What a closing shot. Not a man moved.

By the way, things in museums have alot of value and information......hence the reason they are in a museum and not in a dustbin.

The simple solution to the country problem is to take the country name out of the mix. Dere are enuff landmarks to name franchises after. It also means dat the local cricket Boards may soon be non existent since they will only need to to supervise U17 and U19 cricket.
What I do not understand is will players need to reside wherever their franchise is based, as in most other franchise based sports, so that they can participate fully in the selection process or are teams just going to select overseas players on past performance. This has cost implications dat may not have been thoroughly thought out.

And by doing the same thing, you mean playing regional cricket as sovereign nation states?
Point out to me the scientific evidence which said that franchising is the change that has been missing in West Indies cricket.
The Caribbean T20 has been franchised. Point out to me where are the improvements to be observed in the Leewards and Windwards?
Point out to me exactly which opportunities are being created for youngsters to come on the scene in the playing 11 without being kept out of their respective island teams by regional and international foreign players.
Point out to me if international foreigners are going to be given citizenship to play for the West Indies. After all, most of the regional teams in the CPL apart from Trinidad and Guyana barely have a half a team made up of cricketers born and bred in their respective islands.
I await the scientific evidence which said that dis franchise madness is the change that has been missing in West Indies cricket.
P.S. - Change(for the sake of making a change) is NOT always a good thing.

Please disprove the above excerpt.

If RCB goes to Jamaica to play a match am sure dey would fill the grounds
Did anybody ask the governments when Worrell, Walcott, Hall, Shane Julien, even Adam Sanford and others represented other countries?
And which government would you have to ask to represent the Windwards and Leewards?
Challenge de franchise system using other criteria like the integration of youth etc. but not on those cause dey hold as much water as a bucket filled wid holes.

For one the improvements in regional cricket won't be sudden. Secondly we been doing the same thing for 20 odd years and we cricket still suck (TM, you big fren Chrissy)
So why you fighting down summen that has been working in other sports and in the same cricket elsewhere. Yes we been having teams with sovereign names and you want to hold on to that. As Maispwi, said above just change teh name then Seeing you having such a big problem cause that's the only point you have and keep holding unto that makes sense you know. the fact that a Trini will be playing for a team name Windward. Well if that's the issue changeit to Riverland. Plus even in local leaguie cricket you got fellas who live in one village yet playing for another village. So do you have a problem with that as well. Wherever you live I'm sure that happens too no?
Stop go on like you can't think outside the box for a minute and being closed minded like you locked off from the world or summen.

So you are ignoring the tangible evidence and concerns already evident in the franchised CPL to come with some hypothetical improvement pie? Oh okay.
Since the improvements won't be sudden (
apparently by your own scientific research, you have already fore-concluded that there will be improvements), I suppose we could all wait.....(ummmm) for these alleged MUST come improvements.
Suppose if the opposite to the word improvement happens, we'll just say we were waiting for the improvements.
Because your roof is leaking, go and mash up de whole house nuh. Is improvements you looking for...

i cant prove anything to you......but i respect your opinion. i also respect the writer and his opinions, but i have read his articles for years and he like others are hoping the glory days of the 80s will return by doing the same thing.
lets look at our first class teams......... IMO the teams are poor, and in the case of the leeward islands team, they dont have one player who could make any other first class team.

You talking a lot about scientific research
What scientific research is behind you not supporting the idea of franchise regional cricket?
Cause all your arguments seems to be based on 'feelings' rather than science.
The science of which you speak is simple
Look around, franchise cricket has been working all over. No matter the dynamics of the Caribbean islands it can work here with simple tweaking. There is no exact science and there is always room for adjustments.
You dont' want it to work because you don't think that a Bajan should be on a Windward team. Where's the science in that?

Sometimes change is necessary even if it is met with resistance. Is it better to have a franchise system and become number one in the world again or no franchise system but continue to languish at the bottom of international cricket?

Didn't I present evidence about this franchise stuff by making reference to the tangible evidence from the CPL?
- Where is the alleged improvements to the weaker teams in the region?
- How many youngsters are finding it easy to make their respective island T20 teams?
- You have retirees coming to the CPL to make money.....and taking up spots which should have gone to islanders.
Apart from Trinidad and Jamaica, tell me what percentage of the other island CPL teams are made up of born and bred locals? Tell me nuh.
After all, you claim I ain't present any evidence.
My feelings eh.......(smh).
Again, y'all go say give the CPL
enough time. I do note that in that context, the word enough means(okay, I'm not sure how much time it needs to bring about tangible improvements so let's just wait until we see something).

... that's one issue to be fixed, but do we have the money to get better players?
I have no problem with franchise cricket. I will though hope they accommodate you and continue the inter-island league.
We need a professional "club" league [full stop].

Oh waw. And I suppose the only way to do so is to bring in retirees and rejects from overseas to take up spots in island teams which ought to have gone to persons from these islands.
So much for the development of player base from which to pick the West Indies I suppose. I suppose, the island cricketers will develop by watching cricket on TV and by being relegated to Nets Only Cricketers.
I suppose another way to kill a rat which is hiding in your house when dem rat trap and poison can't ketch it is to just burn the whole house down. Oh well.....
If dat ain't kill the rat, at least you can rest assured that the rat will have to find somewhere else to hide. I suppose, that's also a version of the ideology call Improvement.

No, They will come through the ranks if good enough. That's why you have an HPC. Now if every territory would have one, more players would come through, thus limiting the amount of oversees players.
I know because less and less dots going get selected you have an issue.

Tell me nuh, if you put a healthy baby donkey to run with a healthy big donkey, which one do you think will win?
Tell me how an HPC graduate will outshine the years of experience of a retiree or some other foreigner.
This franchise system is going to stunt the development of young cricketing talent in the region. After all, is money dem interested in.........so the healthy adult donkey stand a better chance of delivering the goods than the baby donkey.
