The warning lights set off by Darren Bravo's decision to decline selection for West Indies' imminent tour of South Africa "for personal reasons" are too strong to be ignored. No less so is the continuing absence from any cricket since June of Kieran Powell.

They are signals that the two left-handers, the most naturally gifted of the current West Indies batsmen, could well be the latest on the expanding list of professional cricketers overcome by the constant grind of global travel and worn down by the need to succeed in a demanding and fiercely competitive professional environment.

The medical term for the problem has evolved from "acute fatigue syndrome" to "stress-related condition" to simply "depression".

Did you hear what Lloyd said today....he said Bravo is a star player...but if he doesn't play regularly....someone will take his place and perform well...and there may be no immediate place for Bravo when he is ready to play.

Getting married is a taking care of personal business and is not something a pro sports man should use to have his fans confused. If you taking some time off to get married then you say just that. These so call pro players do no not really know how to be professional other that to make the pay check. There are fans involve. I though the WICBC thought them this when there were 12 years old.

Whether it is a "weak spirit" or, as another thread suggested, "horning", that is Darren's problem, we continue to expose our backwardness in the way we think about mental/emotional health issues. When will we get out of the 19th century in our thinking? This is the 21st. Darren needs professional help as well as a social environment that does not see mental health challenges as a sign of moral weakness.

As far as I am concerned the entire WI team who abandoned the tour of India is filled with mental health issues. These guys have emotional problems. Just look at the way they approach their profession.
