The Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA), during this year’s PCL draft to be held later this year, will be required to select at least two players from outside the sub-region while a third option will also be available to the struggling outfit.

Leeward Islands was gifted the selections following their dismal performances in the WICB Regional Super50 and 4-Day competitions where they finished at the bottom of the table in both.

President of LICA, Auckland Hector, welcomed the move by WICB to impose stricter rules for the draft.

“Only Trinidad picked anyone outside of their territory. The West Indies Cricket Board is going to be insisting that two players must be (selected) from outside of the territories as part of the draft selections. In the case of the Leeward Islands who are at the bottom of this year’s tournament, we would be allowed a minimum of three players outside of our territory, and we are going to have the first option of the draft,” he said.

This is a great move to bring some semblance of parity to the playing field

A move that I have been recommending for some time now. Make mandatory the drafting of outside players. Good that leewards got three picks and they need to look for a pace bowler, experienced batsman and a batting allrounder.

This is a welcome move from WICB on the PCL draft. If you do not make it mandatory the domestic pressure comes in to select home players. Now all teams would have to decide on who those 2 players are going to be.

Also the option to extend it to 3 players for LI is good. More competitive the FC set up the better the learning is going to be.

I would also want them to ensure that atleast 1 player is in the Playing eleven. I dont want teams to select below average players and make them warm the bench through the season.

A good decision.

Look at the players Barbados have that could benefit playing elsewhere and the Leewards will benefit as well.

In this Forum , I am on record stating that
it makes absolutely no sense having the
same two or three Teams dominating Cricket in the Region . That sure as Hell aint Progress .

It would be better if resources are targeted
to weak Teams ; so that ultimately the standard in the Region will improve .

My good friend Openning Philosophy is that every jack man for himself is the way to go . That in my opinion is pure selfishness , and I will never subscribe to that Crap .

The goal should be to have ALL the Regional Teams be very competitive , so that the West Indies Team will be more competitive in the International Cricket
Arena .

Some people are of the opinion that if their Team is well organized and have the resources , others are on their own .
This reminds me of the well known adage :

"A CHAIN IS AS STRONG AS ITS WEAKEST LINK"

I applauded the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket
Board for taking young Emmanuel Stewart of Grenada with their Team recently . WE need
Boards in the Region doing things like that .

Some people in this Forum fail to recognize that it is either WE stick together or sink together , from a Cricket perspective .

I do believe that not much attention is given to the challenging logistics that
both the Windward & Leeward Islands face .
I am referring to the fact that they are a collections Islands , separated by the Sea
, and as a result do not get to train or play together as much as the other 4 Territorial Teams .

It is very easy for people , in T & T ;
Barbados ; Jamaica & Guyana to look at this as a trifling matter , but it is not a trifling matter .

I am at issue with the headline. Benefit from poor performances? It makes it sound like that they are being rewarded for their poor performance this season.

Thatps exactly how the draft system in the US works.

The worse you are the more chances you get, to improve through the draft.

The problem is we have no draft rating system.

If you think that's the problem, you are beyond naive. I guarantee you that if there is a scientifically proven draft rating system, it will be ignored by simplistic, closed-minded people throughout the region.

I don't really blame these people. The lack of exposure to different, successful systems is the core of the problem.
