HEADLINE: WICB starts series of town-hall meetings to engage public

CaribbeanCricket.com May 18, 2015, 1:42:51 PM

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – President of the West Indies Cricket Board Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron will host a series of public town-hall meetings around the Caribbean over a period of three months, starting this Friday in Barbados.

Cameron said it was part of the WICB’s plan to engage directly with the regional public on the issues facing the game in the region.

“We believe the public town-hall meeting is a great way to hear what people across the Caribbean have to say about the important issues facing their game,” he said.

“It presents a great opportunity for our stakeholders to learn more about initiatives which the WICB is working on at this time.”

He added: “We want to restore the public confidence in the WICB and we can only do this if we talk to our public – the fans, sponsors and our governments.

“We are looking to engage in open, honest dialogue with the public, so we encourage all to attend and actively participate, as we seek to rebuild West Indies cricket together.”

The first town-hall meeting will take place in Lecture Theatre 1 on the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies, starting from 7 p.m.

Plans are already under foot to stage a second public town-hall meeting just prior to the first Test between West Indies and Australia in Dominica. Further details will be disclosed at a later date.

Bad idea.

Town Hall meetings are not required. It is only a smoke screen and a shameless attempt to travel wine and dine with the players money.

The WICB already knows what the public wants and what is required to move the administration of WI cricket into the modern world but they won't do it, cause they want to hold on to power and their fat pay checks.

Who is going to pay for this expense?

sunfish May 18, 2015, 3:08:15 PM

This is a good idea. Engage with the Caribbean people directly for the first time and make them feel that their input matters..

However WICB, be prepared for the shouters, and the disrupters, and those who are only interested in tearing down.. So we stop in the Caribbean...

Patterson and Lucky reports. Reports compiled and presented by prominent and highly regarded West Indians that had absolutely zero effect on the WICBC

But these "meetings" will?

Lol!

As Emir said... Get your bridges While supplies last. They going fast!

What could really be bad about the WICB having to provide answers to the public? You have a point about the reports but what bearing does that have on this initiative? Isn't this a good sign that they just might be trying to be somewhat accountable to the public? As far as I know nothing of the sort has been attempted before so shouldn't we welcome this opportunity and attend the meetings and pose some of the questions and make some of the criticisms that we make here everyday?

imusic May 18, 2015, 4:56:25 PM

In reply to spider

The commissioning of a report(s) to make recommendations that would change the way the WICBC operated was reason for hope for REAL change.

The results of that with more or less the same people in charge gives no reason that this latest PR stunt will yield meaningful change IMO.

You are free to view this latest announcement however you see fit. That is your right.

I don't see it the same way.

“We are looking to engage in open, honest dialogue with the public, so we encourage all to attend and actively participate, as we seek to rebuild West Indies cricket together.”

We know how this WICBCPA operates

They did much the same thing with the meeting with the senior WI players to talk about the proposed (but what really turned out to be a fait accompli) sharing $$ with FC players.

They create an illusion of transparency with little or no substance to go along with it.

If it was held at UWI at the the sight of the now infamous lucky report symposium, which was only attended by Twissy and Hue Crosskill.I guarantee at least 3 attendees. That is Twissy and her 2 bodyguards, lucky and Patterson report.

Life is really very Funny . Now that the
Emperors are facing a potential Lawsuit of
43 Million Dollars , They have condescended to talk to the General Public.

This no doubt is a very calculated move ,
and I believe designed to facilitate the
Emperors getting access to Taxpayers money .

Please bear in mind , These are the very same people , who commissioned the Patterson Report , swiftly rejected that Report , and then when asked by the Regional Governments to implement the Patterson Report , ignored that Request ,
and commissioned the Wilkin Report , which
they also swiftly rejected .

They are so Arrogant in the Region , never once did they consider the fact that they
aint own any Stadia or Cricket Fields in the Region . Humility just aint one of their Virtues .

My take is that at that juncture , they had no idea , that sometime in the future
, They would be facing a potential 43 million dollars lawsuit , because of their
Reckless behaviour .

When was the last time , did the Emperors
who are in the governance of Cricket in the Region , decided that it was important
to talk to the General Public ??

Folks , this is just another elaborate
CHARADE ; designed to grant them permission to Sup freely at the Public Trough .

It is quite possible that the Regional Governments demanded that they have Town
Hall Meetings . Now that they are Broke , and facing a potential 43 Million Dollars
Lawsuit , they are currently eating Humble
Pies .

Once they are allowed to sup , at the Public Trough ; they will once again return to their Arrogant ways .

Evidently you are drinking the Kool Aid
Cameron et al are distributing . The point
is that the People in the WICB are only doing this because they want Money .

They are flat out Broke , and the BCCI is breathing down their Necks . Do YOU really believe that if the Emperors had money they would have Town Hall Meetings ???

Now if they were facing a potential 43 million dollars lawsuit , when the Regional Governments asked them to implement the
Patterson Report , they would have proposed
doing that with alacrity .

But when they were asked , they were not facing a potential 43 million dollars lawsuit so they bluntly ignored the Request of the Regional Governments .

Look the WICB only intends looking after itself & those in it . They don't give a Damn about anyone else .

I would be happy to hear your explanation connecting the WICB's need for money and the proposed meetings with the public. How exactly do they think the town-hall meetings will aid them in getting the required 43 million to repay India?

Perhaps you should view this as an opportunity to voice your problems with the Worst International Cricket Board to their faces and tell them what you think of their administration of cricket in the region. You could also probably submit some of the proposals you offer here. You can never tell what will come of it. Give it a shot. Maybe it is your intervention that will save our cricket.

Change is hard to embrace-It may not be the best but its a refreshing start to a public that's been crying for transparency. And feedback--

In reply to spider

Look find out how many Reports the WICB has commissioned ; there may be more , but my recollection is that the WICB commissioned

THE LUCKY REPORT ; THE PATTERSON REPORT ;

& THE WILKIN REPORT .

The salient point is what changes did any
of these Reports bring regarding the Structure & Governance of Cricket in the Region ?????????????

The answer is , NOT A BLASTED THING . There
is an adage that is appropriate here :

" FOOL ME ONCE SHAME ON YOU

FOOL ME TWICE SHAME ON ME . "

The gist of what I am saying is that WE have been fooled by the Emperors by their
commissioning of the Reports I have mentioned above .

They did Nothing , WE know that because
there has been no discernable Structural
Changes in the WICB . So please spare me
the B.S that you are peddling here .

As I have stated , the only reason why the
Emperors are having these Town Hall Meetings , which btw I proposed years ago in this Forum , is because they now find
themselves in Deep DOO DOO .

I have absolutely no doubt , that there exists an ulterior motive for the Emperors
pretending to be so magnanimous . It will
all be revealed to us soon .

Interestingly when they were flush with cash , they never thought it necessary to
have Town Hall Meetings with the General
Public . But suddenly they are pretending that they have a Saul on the Road to Damascus moment . I cannot subscribe to that elaborately veiled Scheme .

Every move the people in the governance of Cricket in the Region makes is always designed to benefit itself ; rather than Cricket in the Region . In essence Tigers
cannot change their stripes .

Congratulations ; you have looked through the thick Smokescreen that the Emperors
have designed ; My take is that they have some ulterior motive for these Town Hall type Meetings .

Perhaps they are trying to bamboozle the
Public & potential Financial Sponsors , after their Reckless Behaviour , when they
deliberately pulled the plug on the Indian Tour to massage their over inflated Egos ,
without an iota of consideration of the
Financial Plight they put the BCCI in .

Does any Sane person really believe that by
its Reckless Behaviour that would attract
an avalanche of Financial Sponsors ????

This is an attempt by the Emperors to try
repairing its already tattered Image , but
their Image has already been torn to shreds
and like Humpty Dumpty can never ever be put together again .

WICB Items for sale;

1. Pure air, all particles removed , prevents and cures respiratory ailments , walk with your vessel $100 per cubic foot .

2. Pure Sun light . great source of vitamin D , be careful it can burn, note that this item is only available for purchase between the hours of 6 am to 6pm with some variation on resourcing time over the calender year.

The WICB like many organisations in these part is good at selling snake oil to a seemingly stupid public.

It seems obvious that WICB has got or bought some (good) public relations advice, and is using it.

Now... the tack you should be taking is to insist - and I know insisting is your strong suit razz razz - that this should not be a one-time affair, but just a beginning, as Dave has said, and be really a continuing exercise to win minds and influence people (Of course, some on this MB will resist to the death).

But you POINT will not be one of them because by so doing, the Board will be starting to shed the arrogance of which you and most of us have rightly accused them, and will be taking the people of the West Indies into their confidence, for the first time, at last!

Peoples participation, ownership, transparency all good things.

But if not done rights they can be shams and actually hurt participation, transparency and the true owners having a say in the way forward.

Guess will just have to wait and see.

One thing that needs to improve is the board's overall COMMUNICATION with people.

Physical town-hall meetings will be useless if Comms and structure for public feedback dont improve.

The salient point which obviously has escaped you is this , what motivated them to do this now ???

My take is that there are 3 reasons why they are doing this :

1. They realize that their Behaviour in

pulling the Plug on the Indian Tour was
Arrogant & Reckless . I aint about to
Buy that one , Emperors don't behave
like that , it aint in their nature .

2. The Governments in the Region demanded
they have Public Town Hall Meetings
if they want to Sup at the Public
Trough .
3. They are trying to see if they can get
Financial Sponsors , as WE all are
Fully aware they are Flat Broke , this
even before their Reckless Behaviour
regarding the Tour to India . I dont
believe that these Town Hall Meetings
are going to fly with potential
Sponsors in or out of the Region .

The ratings of our Team in the longer
Formats of the game is a Colossal
Obstacle regarding getting Sponsors .

The truth is this , EVERYTHING that
the WICB does is designed to ensure
that nothing ever changes & it remains
in the governance of Cricket FOREVER .

Why would they want to change when they are their own Bosses , and are answerable to NO
ONE , not even the International Cricket Cabal ; aka the ICC .

Worse yet , they have the overwhelming support of the Sports Journalists in the
Region . Most articles that are very critical of the Emperors are never written by the usual Suspects , They are written by persons knowledgeable about Cricket , like
Dr. Rudy Webster , who currently has an
article in the Rum Shop , entitled :

" KERRY PACKER DEJAVU "

Read it you will find it very instructive .
There are Reports that a Syndicate wants
to Challenge the ICC & its Members hold on

West Indies cricket has been in the doldrums for almost twenty years. During that time several Presidents have talked about how they would turn West Indies cricket around. Unfortunately, they were not able to do it.

What we need is less talk and more action. Cameron needs to assemble the best cricket minds in the region and draw up a blueprint to save West Indies cricket.

Talk is cheap, as they say at NIKE, "Just Do It".

WHY IS IT THAT THEY COMMISSIONED SEVERAL

The failure to implement any of the

means that they are perpetrating a Charade
