Thirteen wickets made for an eventful opening day of the series in Dominica, and it was Australia who went to stumps in the slightly stronger position. Denesh Ramdin gave his men the chance to bat first but they survived only two sessions for their 148 before Australia played out the final session of the day and went to stumps on 85 for 3, trailing by 63 on a surface that had proven surprisingly challenging.

Steven Smith was Australia's rock during the home summer against India and again he appeared immovable, although he also found scoring difficult with variable bounce and a slow outfield. He ended the day on 17 from 67 deliveries and had not scored a boundary; debutant Adam Voges had struck four fours in his 20 from 27 balls, perhaps the positive result of nervous energy.

David Warner had fallen early for 8 when he was surprised by extra bounce from a Jerome Taylor delivery and a leading edge was taken at point. Shaun Marsh, promoted to open in the absence of Chris Rogers, edged to slip off Jason Holder for 19, and Michael Clarke edged Devendra Bishoo behind after scoring a bright 18 off 28 balls, including one six over midwicket.

Maybe in two and a half games. Australia is in FULL control. I said posted it on caribbeancricket.com, moments after the so called home team won the toss and elected to play Shaun Gabriel instead of Veerasammy Permaul. To have Permaul and Bishoo bowling in tandem would have been very tuff for Australia at Windsor park. So far Bishoo has 6 wickets and I bet if Permaul was chosen Australia would not score 150. This is not the type of wicket for Gabriel and the result will just confirm that Clive Lloyd and his selectors do not seem to be computer literate to follow stats. First it was dropping of Chanderpaul who is averaging 96 test runs on this ground, and now it is Permaul.

Keep coming with your nonsensical stats of the 50's and see how many games your boys will win. Back in the 50's cricket games were won on the field; that's not the case today as good teams win on the internet first, where they do there homework and then on the field. Clearly windies only depending on the field. Go back to the last time they played Australia in Dominica, in 2012 spinners took 25 wkts, with Shane Shillingford alone taking 10 out of the 13 wkts taken by our spinners. Aussies won that game by 75 runs and if Shane had another spinner to help that. would be a different game. 3 years later you going to face the same team and you still playing 1 spinner? Furthermore, in that game, Chander had scores of 68 and 69, and you dropping him? Lloyd was a genius on the field but that does not make him a good selector. Unless we realize that Lloyd is in the wrong position, our cricket will be dead.

My point ..since you missed it, is that all statistics must be put in context, so in addition to Shiv's record at Dominica, we'd have to look at the fact that he is 40, and his averages at all grounds maybe over the last year, year and a half..would have been falling.

ok, I rest my case. I still believe they should have given Shiv a chance to play in Dominica and if he fails there, then we would all be satisfied that his days are over. The Dominica wicket calls for skills and patience as seen in Adam Voges. Unfortunately for us we have no one on this current team with such skill and patience. You all keep talking about his age of 40, as if he has nothing left to offer to these young crop of players and that has been our problem over the years. In test cricket you need the older players to help the younger ones. Viv learnt from Kalicharan, Lara from Viv, Shiv from Lara, but no one to emulate Shiv. So we are left with a bunch of young boys with some talent, but no one to nurture them against a very strong team. In 2011 when Kirk Edwards got his maiden ton in Dominica against India, it was Shiv that was there with him nurturing the young man. There is no such one today. We need to take a page from Pakistan whose captain Misbah-ul-Haq, is 41 years and is still scoring heavily in test cricket. Shiv is going through his struggle but I have no doubts that he would have worked it out if Lloyd had given him an opportunity. He is just too gifted and works too hard on his game for this rubbish
