HEADLINE: Simmons upset with outside 'influence' in ODI selection

CaribbeanCricket.com Sep 26, 2015, 2:40:12 AM

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – West Indies head coach Phil Simmons yesterday courted controversy when he slammed “interference from outside” as the reason for the omission of Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard from the one-day squad, for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The 52-year-old Simmons, who took charge of the squad back in March following the ICC Cricket World Cup, said he, chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd and captain Jason Holder were all in favour of the Trinidadian duo’s re-inclusion but “people” had used their “influence” to keep them out of the squad.
In a candid interview with reporters on the final day of the West Indies camp at the 3Ws Oval, Simmons castigated such interference as “wrong” and said it had robbed the region of its best ODI squad.
However, he did not say who the interference was coming from.
“I think it’s disappointing from the fact that I haven’t got the best 50-over ODI squad that we can select in the Caribbean,” an irate Simmons said.
“The chairman, Mr Lloyd, he came and he gave an exceptional speech saying that he thinks it is time they are back in the squad and he gave exceptional reasons for them being back in the squad.
“Unfortunately, when we went into the selection (meeting) we lost it 3-2. Him and myself – the captain doesn’t have a vote in this – but the captain also gave his views as why they need to be back.”

Smh. Our cricket has too much melee

Strong words Phil!

Kudos to you.

I wonder if the Cabal-which is so averse to independent opinions-will now demand that you apologise for speaking the truth; or IF you will be sidelined until you do so.

It refreshing to know that there are other people with backbones around West Indies cricket.

TAKE A BOW CHRISTOPHER HENRY GAYLE!!!

camos Sep 26, 2015, 5:27:36 AM

Holder siding with the bad people after they appointed him captain only because they saw him as the best dog to play fetch with!
lol

mikesiva Sep 26, 2015, 5:39:55 AM

So, we persist with the nonsense that the captain doesn't have a say in selection matters....

Simmons and Lloyd voted in favour of Bravo and Pollard. Who are the three members of the selection panel who voted against them?

cool

camos Sep 26, 2015, 5:46:12 AM

will Simmo be disciplined for airing confidential matters?

everything for WICB is confidential, even the time of day.

dayne Sep 26, 2015, 9:15:20 AM

Simmons might not be the head coach for this team for a reasonable time, he just offended and outed the higher-ups for being vindictive and vengeful.

FAI Sep 26, 2015, 10:13:59 AM

Clive Lloyd was one of my heroes as a proud Guyanese and West Indian. I have lost total respect for him with all this nonsense. Both him and Simmons should be be fired immediately!!!

Spot on. The request from simmo is the biggest fault in WI cricket

dayne Sep 26, 2015, 12:20:56 PM

Why should Lloyd be fired, Simmonds just said, that Lloyd and himself were in favor of having the players return, but it was blocked by others, the problem seems to be higher-up.

It would have been interesting if Simmons, and not the shameless yes-man Gibson, were the coach when they tried to foist the useless puppet Sammy-"the new Frank Worrell"-on the West Indies team for 3-4 years without having to actually perform to keep his place.

Maybe Cameron has a vote. That would be utterly disgraceful so I hope that's not the case.

jen Sep 26, 2015, 3:46:41 PM

There are 4 selectors + the coach. COurtney Browne, Eldine Baptiste, Coutney Walsh and Clive Lloyd are the selectors for those who don't know.

TAKE OFF THE BLINDERS

You are blaming the wrong administration for the mess that is now. Stop trying to deflect.

Commie Sep 26, 2015, 4:34:59 PM

You walk into a situation where you know the rules. You sign a contract, you use the same system to pick multiple teams for multiple series and now when supposedly a couple of your countrymen get sidelined by the same system you crying.

Fuckries.

Its a puerile stance.

Neither Bravo (who has a decent bowling record vs them) or Pollard have a great record vs SL and Bravo is past his playing prime. Pollard averages TWO vs them with the bat. TWO !

You want to destabilise the other players in the team for a couple never beens?

Bravo past his playing prime at 31 but is at top of his T20 game both with the bat and ball based on what? Because Commie says so.

You want to destabilise the other players in the team for a couple never beens?

None of the current players are establised as individuals or team. What is going to be destabilised?

ducks Sep 27, 2015, 7:26:53 AM

IMO Mr Simmons has impuned the integrity of three members of the committee. Will he be made to put up or pay up?

Can you imagine if Gibson had inferred such of Walsh for example.

POINT Sep 27, 2015, 8:54:16 AM

I will insist that when you hold
the upper hand in any negotiations ,
the onus is on YOU to get most of what you want .

If that aint possible , the best course of action is to walk away . My perspective is that prior to getting into the Den of Iniquity , Simmons , had enough clout & time to tell the people in Ireland that he was only
exploring the possibility of being
the Coach of the West Indies Team .
It was Simmons responsibility , to get a NO INTERFERENCE CLAUSE in his Contract . Evidently he failed to do that .

Perhaps he may have burnt his Ireland Bridge too quickly . This is merely speculation on my part , but the fact that the Supreme Emperor in the WICB
has the power to overrule Both Simmons & Lloyd , informs me that not only is Simmons a bad Negotiator , it is also dangerous to Cricket in the Region , that even Lloyd's recommendation was ignored .

Folks , WE are running faster that Usain Bolt , but WE are still at the freaking Starting Line . Lord Help Us .But then Cameron is not only the President of the WICB ; he is also the Co President of the Jamaica Cricket Board .

POINT Sep 27, 2015, 11:56:33 AM

In reply to camos

My belief is that he is , because he now has much more Power than other Presidents of the WICB . Perhaps that may be because He & Hinds engineered the Coup that made WIPA currently , a
branch of the WICB .

The gist of what I am stating is that
engineering that Coup , has made Cameron in essence the First among Equals .

POINT Sep 27, 2015, 12:17:17 PM

In reply to jacksprat

Dummy , the make up etc is only pon paper , in reality , tings na run so .
This is precisely why I am advocating that there must be a complete Restructuring of Cricket in the Region .

I am in favour of ONE ENTITY , with
TWO DEPARTMENTS.A CRICKET DEPARTMENT
run & Staffed by former great West Indies Players . they will be empowered to be in the governance of ALL MATTERS pertaining to Cricket ;
with absolutely NO INTERFERENCE , from the other Department that is the
ADMINISTRATIVE DEPARTMENT .

The Administrative Department will have the usual compliment of Officers , President ; VP ; Treasurer etc .
a Legal Advisor ; PRO Team ; etc .

DOES ANYONE HERE BELIEVE THAT THE

COUP THAT CAMERON & HINDS ENGINEERED

TO MAKE WIPA A BRANCH OF THE WICB WAS

DONE OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF THEIR

HEARTS ??

ME NA TINK SO

My take is that it has made Cameron the Supreme Emperor in the WICB , so as I stated , what dey pon paper aint necessarily what is reality .

This is precisely why I will continuously state that Cricket in the Region needs to undergo Serious Structural Changes . Never mind that those in the WICB will resist doing that with every fiber in their bodies .
In my opinion the reason why they will forever strenuously resist any changes , is that they are deathly afraid of their power being Cut .

As usual , they are more interested in their Perks & Power than doing things to raise the standard of Cricket in the Region and ensuring that Our Players & Team are fully competitive in the International Cricket Arena .

Mr. Semi-Literate, at least learn the basic rules of punctuation before you try to call anyone a 'dummy". With your repetitive, wordy and boring self, you seem to just stringing the same tired words together without having a clue about what you are talking.

You really come across as an ignoramus pontificating about things of which you are totally ignorant. Hopefully by now you would have educated yourself about the real meaning of "[La] Turret Syndrome" that you used to accuse anyone who pointed out your idiocy! big grin big grin

Courtney Walsh

Courtney Browne

Eldine Baptiste

Clive Lloyd.

2 to 2

Who had the deciding vote? Was it Lemonade Dave or Pybus?

Obviously, it was Richard Pybus. This outside force had to be Pybus because he is the director of cricket and what he says goes.

Pybus is one smart cookie. He made sure to stay behind the scene and wheel that whip as a

director of cricket operations. And wheel it he did. Welcome aboard Simmons…Pybus will eff

you up like how he effed up Otis.
