“I fully endorse the sentiments and position taken by the chairman of selectors and the head coach, and I join with Simmons in condemning any act that undermined his leadership and the discretion of the board of selectors to field the best team.”

ST GEORGE’S – Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has labelled as “disturbing” claims by West Indies head coach Phil Simmons of outside interference in the selection of the One-Day International squad for Sri Lanka.

Mitchell, the Chairman of CARICOM’s subcommittee on cricket governance, said Sunday any selection panel needed to be “free of interference, fear, or favour”, and joined with Simmons in condemning “any act that undermined his leadership and the discretion of the Board of Selectors to field the best team”.
“It is my view that West Indies cricket is fortunate to have a leadership team that includes head coach Phil Simmons, captain Jason Holder and chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd,” Mitchell said in a statement.

Mitchell said it was important the selection process ensured that West Indies always had their best sides available.

Admirable sentiments from the PM.

I am curious: Has this always been the PM's stance re advocating for the selection of the best possible team?

It would be interesting then to revisit the Sammy fiasco when Hilaire ran roughshod over the selectors, in getting rid of the best players, in order to field his handpicked Sammy-led, so-called 'star team'.

I guess some among us were too busy celebrating the unwarranted elevation of one of their own to be oncerned about such quaint notions such as fairness, transparency and the autonomy of the selection panel, sans 'outside interference' !

Isn’t this what has been talked about on this board Ad nauseam for the years that I have had the privilege of access here?............apparently the hierarchy is just as insular as many posters here who demand that players from their territory be selected, many deserving only in their eyes.
It seem obvious that the people at the top are more interested in their interest, their betterment, than they are in the betterment of WI cricket.

Grenada Prime Minister is backing Simmons

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has labelled as “disturbing” claims by West Indies head coach, Phil Simmons, of outside interference in the selection of the One-Day International squad for Sri Lanka.
Mitchell, the Chairman of Caricom’s Sub Committee on Cricket Governance, said yesterday any selection panel needed to be “free of interference, fear, or favour”, and joined with Simmons condemning “any act that undermined his leadership and the discretion of the Board of Selectors to field the best team.”

I forget now, but please remind me, who was it that once advocated for the selection of one Devon Smith simply because "the test would be played in Grenada"?

In reply to jackspratall of u out don't act like u are all surprise this type of thing has been going on for the longest while beyond the selection problem when it comes to players directly for years upon years wi players are allow to the type of game they know they have to play the way they are directed to by all these board members, why? because places in the team are always under threat

Well, what will Mitchell do about it, will he call an emergency video conference, will he order an investigation, this is getting worse, now it looks like Simmonds will lose his job.
