HEADLINE: I wanted to contribute more to West Indian cricket with the bat: Daren Ganga

CaribbeanCricket.com 2015-10-15 14:13:37

Talk to us about your debut series, historical occasion. The tour almost got cancelled. How did you feel your preparation was as a 19 year old given the circumstances that preceded that South African tour in 1998?

I was really a blue eyed boy and raw in terms of my exposure to international cricket. I had recently captained a team to the United Kingdom and had done well with the bat, that propelled me straight into the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) senior trials and I performed very well at the trials that led me to making my first class debut in 1997 for the Senior T&T team.

Around the same time Brian Lara was at the top of his game as an international cricketer and was leading the West Indian team and was desperately looking for young talented cricketers to build a team and build the future for West Indian cricket. It so happened my timing fell in synch with his effort and what he saw in me sparked an interest. In 1998 I scored my maiden first class hundred in my 7th first class match against Barbados.

In those days, anyone who scores runs against Barbados was given a little more attention. That performance selected me on that international squad to tour South Africa in 1998 without much first class experience. The whole premise of my selection was to blood a young player and provide him with opportunities and expose him to the international arena.

I'll say it again....if DG had lead from the front as windies captain, WI would be, by now, in the top.

He said dat the only spot that was available in de WI team was as an opener and he felt he did not have enough experience at opening at de FC level suh it was tuff fuh him at de International Level....

He opened fuh de WI U19 teal alongside Gayle in England, he can't blame WICB fuh de inexperience, he should blame TTCB...

How come yuh nah ask dis as a follow question yuh skunt? lol lol

You can't keep poking at an official interview. You have to give the people some slack.. You want to grab as much information as possible without appearing like a skunt lol lol lol lol

That's what I learnt from interviewing. You have to have a style that the guy opens up to you more, rather than trying to poke holes and make him uncomfortable and miss a genuine story. If it was an obvious lie, sure.. But this one i had to give him the benefit. smile

Rumshop talk is different from in person talk, For instance if i meet you in person I would not call you a fugly muddie skunt. I will just stop at skunt lol lol lol

Which explains why he was being groomed by that famous Catholic priest Father BC Lara..

Daren Ganga full of it. He never opened in regional cricket. He always bat in the middle order, pile up a whole heap of runs in dungheap, make the team as an opener, then look completely at sea. DG trick nough people for years with that trick. If he was so interested in his game at the international level he woulda insist on getting the first class practice he needed at that position.

Good read Venky Babu. Keep it up. I enjoyed the anecdote about the NZ test, which I thought the Umpires gave to the Kiwis when they roughed up that ball and put it into play. The other thing that he didn't say is that the ball could have been retrieved but Daniel Vettori signaled to the ground staff not to, because they were looking to change the ball.
