HEADLINE: Three players penalised under WICB Code of Conduct

CaribbeanCricket.com Nov 12, 2015, 3:48:58 AM

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board confirmed today that Dave Bernard Jr, Kevin Stoute and Shane Shillingford have been penalised under the Code of Conduct, following the first round of the Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament which ended last Monday.

Bernard and Stoute were reported by umpires Peter Nero, Jonathan Blades and Ryan Willoughby during the match between Barbados Pride and Jamaica Scorpions at Kensington Oval for Level 1 breaches of the code.

They both showed dissent at an umpire’s decision by appealing excessively for an lbw decision which was given “not-out”.

Shillingford was reported by umpires Nandkumar Shivsankar, Joel Wilson and Imran Moakan during the match between Windward Islands Volcanoes and Guyana Jaguars at the Guyana National Stadium, also for a Level 1 breach of the code.

Shillingford was penalised for conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game, when he attempted to bring the game into disrepute through pointing at his elbow during an appeal for caught while he was batting in the 45th over of the Volcanoes’ second innings, deliberately attempting to influence the umpire’s decision.

All three players were fined 10 per cent of their match fees, after they admitted to the offence and accepted the imposition of the proposed sanction.

I do not have a problem regarding having a Code of Conduct for Players , and Players being disciplined for breaches of the Code of Conduct .

I do have a problem with Cricket Boards not having a Code of Conduct regarding their Behaviour . In that Regard the
WICBC has failed to exercise Good Governance Regarding Cricket in the Region .

It seems also that the ICC does not have a Code of Conduct for its Member
Organization . But it also has a Code of Conduct for Players who are under
the jurisdiction of its Member Boards .
I am firmly of the opinion that what is good for the Goose must also be good for the Gander . Therefore the
ICC needs to have a Code of Conduct for its Member Cricket Boards .

It is not good , that the ICC has allowed the WICBC to become a Rogue
Cricket Board , steeped in Arrogance ;Incompetence ; Ineptness ; Lacking
in Managerial Skills ; Lacking in Business Acumen ; Lacking in Foresight & Vision .

It aint that the ICC is unaware of the Massive Shortcomings of the WICBC . The ICC bluntly refuses to demand that the WICBC exercise Good Governance in the Region .

Meanwhile the ICC can penalize the
USA Cricket Association . Some thing
is not Right here , and Smells to high Heaven . Then the ICC has the temerity to say that Governments must not intervene in Cricket .

In my opinion The Regional Governments must explore all avenues
available , to have the WICBC & the
ICC answer charges in a Court of Law
regarding their actions in the Sad ; Sorry Sordid History of West Indies Cricket .

The World through Mass Communication is a Global Village , therefore the
ICC can never ever claim that it is unaware of the Maladministration of the WICBC .

The People in the Region deserve better from both the ICC & the WICBC
I personally will have no qualms if the Regional Governments take both the ICC & the WICBC to Court , due to the ICC failing to properly apprise the WICBC of its failures to exercise
Good Governance . and the WICBC for
deliberately becoming a Rogue Cricket
Board .

It is very imperative that there is
a Code of Conduct for the ICC regarding allowing any of its Members
to become a Rogue Cricket Board . Also the WICBC for becoming a Rogue Cricket Board .

The Question then is Who will Bell the Cat . Let us all find that out
by taking the ICC & the WICBC to Court . Surely they both cannot be above the law .

OK, no problem with discipline as long as it is consistent and correct. It would be interesting to know if the ball actually hit Shilly on the elbow or he was lying. IMO the former should be OK and the latter should be punished.

I gine watch now and see what happens then there is an appeal for LBW against a batsman who raises his bat to tell the ump that he got an edge and should not be given out.

How about a batsman that edges the ball hard and knows that he did but does not walk, and gives the impression he did not touch it? Isn't that trying to enfluence the ump's decision?

Then you have keepers, a la Rammo claiming a catch or stumping when they dropped the ball; fielders claiming catches that hit the ground. These typically do not get called for breaches but go to the review for a decision. I see no difference. There are very few that the fielder really is not sure of; and I have caught balls that touched the ground at the same time I clutched them, so it can happen. But not that often.

If the appeal was for a catch and the ball hit his elbow, then he is not out.

I do not agree that Shillingford should be penalised for "trying to influence the umpire" in this way. It is a natural reaction, and cannot be interpreted to be putting the game into disrepute. Absolute nonsense!

rolleyes rolleyes

However, if the ball came off his wrist or glove and he pointed to his elbow, then that is a different story.

I disagree. This is an stupid penalty. There is gamesmanship in professional sport and if an umpire is likely be influenced by a player's action "after the fact" that that umpire should not be officiating. The umpire is supposed to go by what he sees in real time. That's it.

So what happens if replays show that a player hit the ball and did not walk. Is he likely to be penalized for bringing the game into disrepute?

Are the umpires penalized for giving wrong decisions. Thre were a number of contentious decisions in dat game.

Shillingford was not the only one dat did not agree wid the decision he got. Some players lingered at the crease before walking off.

Perhaps poor Shilly was pointingout the ball hit him on the elbow and he may not be able to straighten it when he bowls again. big grin

So when a bowler appeals is he trying to unduly influence the umpire, and should he be considered in breach of any stupid code of conduct?

What a set of ignorance....

The elbow thing is very funny though... lol lol lol lol

I disagree with your statement . It is the responsibility of the WICBC to ensure that the Umpires that it employs
are of a decent caliber .

The fact that there was dissention regarding the Umpiring could possibly mean that the Standard of their Umpiring is below what is expected .

In my opinion , the Coach & Managers of the PCL Teams need to know the level of Umpiring that those standing
as Umpires have achieved .

The gist of what I am saying is this . The WICBC has called this Tournament , the PROFESSIONAL CRICKET
LEAGUE . That being the case , I
expect that the Umpires would also be Professionals in the truest sense of meaning of the word Professional .
