HEADLINE: Waugh calls out Samuels

MELBOURNE—Australia Australian selector Mark Waugh has launched a scathing attack on the West Indies cricket team ahead of the second Test match scheduled to start on Boxing Day in Melbourne.
Waugh has also lashed out at senior members of Jason Holder’s outfit following their ignominious defeat against Australia inside three days in the opening Test. The former Australian cricketer has singled out top order batsman Marlon Samuels and wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Ramdin, questioning their roles in the struggling side.
Waugh is predicting that if the West Indies do not lift their game, the remaining two Tests would be over in three days as well. “He is a problem,” said Waugh, referring to Samuels.
“There is definitely an issue with the senior players in that group. Without knowing exactly what is going on in the dressing room, you can see there is no team camaraderie there or willingness for the senior players to drive any intensity.”

He supposed to be the one of the main batsmen . We got contributions from Kraigg and Darren in the last game , but need them from players that supposed to get starts and carry on . This issue sticks out like a fire-station on fire .

i thought one could not call out senior players for failing?

The irony here is that when these players are called out by the regional press, and or in this here medium, we opt to trivialize if not admonish the caller. In comes a foreigner and it's all legitimate.

Well, this happens when you give the captaincy to someone who has no status in Test cricket yet and is too young to demand effort and intensity from the senior players. The Selectors jumped the gun in this situation, they should have continued with Ramdin being the Test captain and Holder being the ODI captain. After this tour is over they seriously have to look at the composition of the team, will they continue with the youth movement or will they include more mature players like Johnson, Fudadin, Mohammed and Chase, players who are or were in leadership positions in there local teams.

I agree with the Ramdin part but I can't remember Ramdin getting any help from Samuels. Samuels isn't that type of guy, he is v internal. Any captain will have problems with this team and recently all wi captains have had issues with team togetherness to some degree. It takes time and a change of personnel to gel sometimes

I have the feeling that the job of captaincy is too difficult for someone so young who is not yet established and who is presented with a weak team. I am disappointed with the thinking of Lloyd especially, he should have known better, when he became captain of the WI, he had a bunch of stars in his team.

No he didn't. That is perhaps why Lloyd was able to lead that team so well. Those players had a lot of potential and they realized it with Lloyd as the leader and perhaps that is why they gelled on the field at least. Maybe that is what Lloyd is trying to replicate here.
I have my reservations about Holder but I get what Lloyd is trying to do. I would have made Braffit captain if not Ramdin til the end of this series if you want to change

Well, Lloyd had in his first team as captain , Fredericks, Rowe, Kallicharran, young Richards, Roberts, young Holdings, Gibbs, Murray and Grienidge. All of these guys were already local stars and English county stars except for Holding at that time. All could be considered to be some of the greatest payers ever to play for the WI.

This is just another opportunity to bash WI cricket...pay back time for the licks OZ took on the field during the glory days
Right or Wrong about it....he should mind his own business and just STFU...he is an OZ selector and shouldn't be meddling in WI affairs

I am disappointed with the thinking of Lloyd
Lloyd is clearly not thinking ,he is merely experimenting , and hoping to discover a magic formula for success.

Samuels is a valued WICB man in the West Indian team. He is rewarded for his excemplary show of dedication and commitment during the Indian series with a lengthy rope. when even the most expected WICB men turned their backs on WICB.
What more commitment should he show to prove that he cares about West Indian cricket? He should have made the captain ahead of Holder after that incident ( after all, Holder too was one among the strikers) but he was bypassed. There is enough reason to be aggrieved that his commitment was not rewarded but his commitment to WI cricket cannot be questioned.

It does not matter what happens next. That team is not a true representative of what the West Indies have to offer to the world at this moment. The WICB and selectors got it wrong. They have rejected our senior players and embarrassed our region by sending that junior team to Australia to be humiliated. I think those people have committed a grave crime. It is like putting eggs in a rock stone dance so to speak. These players ego will be cracked and broken after that tour. Many of these players will not recover to represent us in the future.

It is physically and psychologically demanding on players to do well at international cricket. To be pushed into situations that you are not ready for, can lead to utter disaster. If we check carefully what has become of some of our more promising players over the years I am certain we can trace it back to this very thing. Xavier Marshall and Barat, rushed players have not recovered . However, players like Lara and Logie waited on the side line until the time was right.

Yes he did. Kanhai had just won A SERIES for the first time in about 7 years. He was inexplicably relieved of the job and it was given to Lloyd. The rest is history. A good history it turned out to be. He is tarnishing his legacy by picking this shyte side to tour Australia.
Is lloyd hoping lightning strikes twice? Indian Kanhai for LLoyd and indian Ramdin to Holder? This is not a racist rant in anyway just fact. Check it allyuhselves.
I really hope he is right.
Right now it looks like it blew up in his face.
Holder eh no captain. Not better than Gayle or Sammy .
Ramdin I can say that he was too passive. Not creative nor aggressive. But Holder? So I do not have a problem with that change but?
Why not Pollard who commands the dressing room and leads by example on the field?
Even Holder looked good under him .

very true, and this is the real reason Samuels is not batting. He allowed the board to use him against his fellow players and they paid him back by giving Holder the captaincy. Samuels thinks he is a leader that is why when you check his history, he and the ones and twos that follow him leave small bush fires everywhere. On Jamaica team he had the falling out with Miller. In the IPl he fell out with Ryder. Then he fell out with Gayle. Maybe this is what Holder was
talking about when he said "stay together and don't get into small groups." When he got the captaincy on a temporary basis in Sri Lanka he played with real purpose.

For professionals who played the game at the highest level and standard, one (no, maybe some) can appreciate their demand for greater professionalism from others in the game.

Waugh's main concern here is the losses the OZ board will suffer as a result of low turnouts at the ground and 3 day matches. That is what pisses them off more than any genuine concern for WI cricket...

Every body wants to say they beat the best. Top players from Pele to MJ to Viv to Waugh to LT
want their legacy to say they beat the crap out of the best opps not tbe 'rest' or dregs from a country or region. Many here quick to say runs scored vs Bang etc is on weak opposition.
To be the best you have to beat the best.

I don't know what Samuels is like in the dressing room. But honestly whether he score 0 or 100 have you ever seen Samuels demeanor any different. He is not animated. And I am sure in addition to his lack of performance in the first test some of the critique he is getting must be carry over from what happened in the big bash a year or 2 ago.
