As West Indies continue their embarrassingly inept performances in Australia, as forecast, the clouds of war are building over the administration of the game at home.

The West Indies Cricket Board last week stated that it had presented its position paper to the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) governments over the recommendations of the committee of independent, eminent West Indians on its governance of the game.

Initiated by the CARICOM sub-committee on cricket and headed by leading university administrator Dr Eudine Barriteau, it declared that West Indies cricket was in such a dire state that the WICB should be "immediately dissolved, its members resign" and a differently constituted board eventually chosen.

The WICB said its paper "looks carefully at how both organisations can work together for the benefit of the improvement of cricket on and off the field". They would subsequently meet "for a series of discussions to come to a consensus on what is deemed the very important matter of the governance of West Indies cricket".

The WICB president, Dave Cameron, had already signalled his adamant opposition to the Barriteau dictates. Cameron's vice-president, Emmanuel Nanthan - or, to accord him his full title as listed on the WICB website, Hon Ambassador Emmanuel Nanthan - left no doubt about the resistance the CARICOM governments can expect.

A well written article, it paints an interesting picture of how people with their own agendas could really foul an institution up, if it was not so important to the Caribbean Community it could have been considered as comical.

The article is mostly critical about the WICB, the members are inflexible to change because it could affect their positions. I have no issue with the players who look to make some money while they can, it is up to the cricket Board to come up with plans to get them to represent their national team.

Many times before Cozier's article , in this Forum , I have cited that the New Zealand Board went through a critical self examination , and transformed itself .

Our problem is the fact that the people in the WICBC will never ever do that ,
because of their Individual & Collective ,COLOSSAL ARROGANCE . Their Individual & Collective LUST FOR POWER

The people on the New Zealand Board
have Business Acumen . The People in
the WICBC have absolutely none . When
You sign a long term Deal with an Entity , it signifies that you have not faith in your employees getting
better or improving .

It is all about the Board , never about the competitiveness of Our Players . The

The WICB is like 17 cooks in the kitchen and they all appear to be on a different page and there is no consensus. It needs to be whittled down to a President, a CFO, one rep per territorial board (who can have a deputy) a secretary, a cricket operations chief,a counsel and an accountant. Added to that a small staff to manage accounts, contracts, planning and the like. That would be a 12 member board with voting rights given to the cricketing territories, with a casting vote by the president.

Programs:
1. Revive the A-Team program and guarantee two to three tours or hostings per year.

2. Improve the HPC using our legends and other coaches and assign both emerging talents and struggling but former recognized talent to it - examples are Barath, Powell, K. Edwards, Beaton, Johnson, Cottrell, Moti, Evan Lewis, etc.

3. Change scheduling - have 50 over and T20 competitions right before the world competitons so they can be used as preparations. Put 4-day before test series.

4. Improve the pitches to help our fast bowlers develop and give batsmen a tougher test. Bring back the bouncer and the hook.

5.Promote cricket better and get more sponsorship. Tie marketing salaries to promotion, sponsorship and revenue performances. Tie cricket retainers to a base and a performance element.

6. Using these programs advance succession planning which has been sorely lacking.

I have been wondering, can't the like minds on this board get together and actually action some of these things?

Can we do our part while we also agitate for the board to restrtucture.

It came to me last night, why did the board feel the need to sell out the elite players...money, they needed money for the PCL...ok.

Couldn't a corporate sponsor still be approached to pay for the elite athletes to play in the regional tournaments.

what is needed is easy, its the how to achieve it is the problem, i'm sure there might be those with the necessary acumen posting on this MB, enough with all the clattering away on our keyboards, can we actually be the change we want to see?

Whats to stop me and you from throwing ourselves into seeing those 6 programmes through to reality.

I believe step 1 is the ptches btw

It is not clear what leverage 'we' as a non-organized fan base have in being instrumental in bringing these to fruition. These need to be handled by board level resolutions that are supported by the territories so getting our reps to put these on the table would be the first step. There has to be commitment and a real desire to advance Windies cricket.

If I get an audience with my rep, I can voice these. Whether he takes them up at the WICB level is another matter because usually they are first vetted at the local board level so that he is representing the local board as well.

Others would have to seek out their own reps. There will be push back because many do not want the status-quo to change.

Does the WICB take proposed resolutions from the fan base, like a corporation takes resolutions from stock holders?

Maybe the WICB should become a publicly traded company???

You mean to tell me if we form a "lobby-group" and actually identify a willing corporate sponsor.

Lets say for example I and others approach COURTS Jamaica, and ask for them to finance refurbishing the pitch at Sabina Park for example, and bring that information back to the public and the WICB.

Can we find someone who personally knows an Andre Russell for example, we sit, we meet, find out what he's getting paid for the Big Bash, ask him if we match that offer or even 70-80% of, could he play here for the opportunity to be the face of the relaunch of regional cricket in the region. We would already have spoken to the Jamaica Scorpions people about what we're trying to do, once again, we bring that information back to the public and the WICB, something along those lines, surely those of us on the MB must know some of the right people who we could actually sell the idea to, get a corporate sponsor or two, of course if they have reservations about dealing with the WICB in its current form, this too we'll report, bring the whole thing crashing down.

Established protocol prevents private individuals from advocating, making commitments or even presenting proposals on behalf of a corporation not employing or contracting the private individuals.

Corporations are very reluctant to engage such individuals even if they present such possibilities as you cite. They question whether there is any financial gain to the private individuals, i.e. corruption, don't want to act on initiatives they did not birth themselves, will not honour any promises implied or made by private parties, etc. etc.

So it becomes very difficult and complicated making them negate such possibilities. This is why I suggested that the reps need to bring it to the board table.

I just say this to say that corporate entities will know us as an organization, we would nor be representing the WICB.

We would be representing the WI cricket fan.

The most important stakeholder and oft ignored, and as a result out numbers have dwindled down to nothing, which is exactly the best thing that could happen for the WICB, cos no there is no one to answer to but themselves, we see how they treat even the Caricom governements, the one entity they would absolutely have to answer to, would be an fan organization. I think this MB is a great starting point for such an organization.

After decades of being bottom dwellers, one would think structural chanjges has to be the elixir, right? Wicb has to have people who are competent, hands-on, proactive, flexible, etc. The whole board should resign.
