CaribbeanCricket.com 2016-01-22 19:05:01

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, January 22 – Shivnarine Chanderpaul has officially retired from international cricket almost 22 years after making his debut.

The durable left-handed batsman, affectionately known as “Tiger”, formally notified the West Indies Cricket Board in an email that he will no longer be available for selection for West Indies. “The WICB acknowledges the invaluable contribution Shiv has made to the game globally and we wish him all the best,” said WICB President Dave Cameron.

Chanderpaul was just this week, part of the Guyana Jaguars side that lost the first semi-final of the NAGICO Super50 Tournament against Trinidad & Tobago .

His debut match for West Indies was against England in March 1994, in his native Guyana, where he made a half-century on debut. The West Indies won by an innings and 44 runs. His final Test against England last May in Barbados was also a memorable occasion for the 00-year-old, as West Indies won by five wickets to level a three-Test series against Alastair Cook’s side. Chanderpaul’s highest score in Tests was 203 not out and he finished with an average of 51.37, and he also posted a top score of 150 in ODIs, finishing with an average of 41.60.

WhY wasn't this done a long time ago so people could have celebrated his good work. He's a fool.

He should have retired, practiced hitting and go play some T20. He's always been a good timer of the ball and surely can hit a few sixes against mediocre league bowlers with some Zone hitting practice. Stewps

Thanks for the memories. You are in a small, elite group of West Indian cricketers who averaged 50 in Tests during a career.

All the best Shiv, was able to see both your debut and last match (albeit on TV) one of thee greats of WI Cricket and cricket on a whole. All the best, Shiv.

Thanks for your service to West Indies cricket.

camos 2016-01-22 22:10:46

great trip Shiv, remember you as a youth coming out at Borda to face England and them big belly men running on the field after your fifty!
lol

Norm 2016-01-22 22:17:51

Was hoping to see him play for WI again, but we may still see him playing for some top class Invitation XI somewhere.

The last connection to the WI golden era, WI would have declined even faster without him after Lara left. He leaves without adequate replacement in the WI lineup, as Lloyd and company talk emptily about "youth".

Verstehen 2016-01-22 22:35:02

Well played that man.

The everlasting image I associate with him is that picture of one man at the crease and almost all of the England team at the other end, waiting for the next Windian bat because they sure as hell couldn't get Chanders out.

Anyone remember that pic?

jacksparrow 2016-01-22 22:47:34

Bitter Sweet moment for me, but Shiv is great.

djdrastic 2016-01-22 23:36:31

What a fantastic player he was.
Based on what's going in West Indies cricket he might be the last of the great batsmen they have produced over the years.

Go well Shivster.

Thank you for the memories. Would have love to see you get the rich celebration you deserved walking off the field for the last time. But that is how life goes sometimes.

A very good career comes to an end, a legend of West Indies cricket.
I await the presentation to you by the WICB for your service

Thank you so much Shiv for all time you were such an important part of West Indies cricket. Greatly appreciated! Greatly appreciated!

mikesiva 2016-01-23 05:37:38

Farewell to a great servant of the game...at least Guyana treated him better than the WICB did. He was allowed half a season with the FC team, where he continued to outperform the youngsters, and a run in the Super50 side, where he was one of the team's top three runscorers.

Larr Pullo 2016-01-23 05:55:42

Great career Shiv. Maximised every ounce of ability you had in your body. Congrats and best of health and luck in the next phase.

ThinEdge 2016-01-23 07:33:57

Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Your career was legendary, your service outstanding, your approach classy!!! I am honored to have had the chance to follow your career. I wish you all the best in life after cricket.

MasterP 2016-01-23 08:13:25

Don,t know what WI would done without you especially after Lara. Thanks for the service and the memories.
Continue to enjoy and produce in whatever you do in your next life.

Kay 2016-01-23 11:07:14

Enjoy the next phase of your life Shiv. The first half brought joy and some hope at times but alas even the captain has to abandon ship. Continue to play off the field so that some of our youngsters follow in your footsteps....

Titleist 2016-01-23 12:41:34

Thanks Shiv, enjoy whatever you choose to do next.

I recall reading an article in the early 90's by an British writer who was writing about your double century that you scored for the WI under 19 vs. England under 19 in England. He commented how extraordinary it was for an 18 year old playing in cold, foreign conditions for the first time to exhibit such concentration and determination.

Many of us didn't realize it at the time but it was a sign of things to come.

Be well, you've made us all proud.

ray 2016-01-23 12:51:54

Thanks for teh memories SHiv...good luck! cool

moneybrain 2016-01-23 13:05:01

Shiv U were sent by God to help the WI through this last 20 yrs.

Unfortunately, WICB, WI batsmen were unable to learn from your approach. Even many not so knowledgeable spectators just did'nt get your strengths.

Thanks for being our "rock of Gibraltar". cool

U have been an inspiration for Kraigg B, hopefully our next rock. cool

anandgb 2016-01-23 16:16:01

Well Played Shiv, in my books you are a WI great, I do not care who says otherwise.

Da-Vincy 2016-01-23 19:34:38
